That debate was freaking AWESOME!!! It's the one where Daddy Bush totally missed the question asked to him by a young lady about the economy and how it personally affected him. He blundered around claiming not to understand the question. Bill moved in for the kill right afterwards: walked up to the young lady made his case and pretty much closed the deal on his winning the election.

It was President George H.W. Bush in 1992, high schoolers.

The powerful message it sends me is "we don't really want women around very often".

"Vice President George H.W. Bush" ? Wasn't he the president from 1988 - 1992...or am I completely mis-reading this part of the article?

I could've sworn Gwen Ifil moderated something, but when I looked it up, yup, just a Vice-Presidential debate. What IS up with that?

I thought Gwen Ifill from PBS moderated a debate last time around, or did I imagine that?

I just looked it up, too and saw the same thing as @6.

@6, yes Gwen Ifil *has* moderated debates in the last two elections. Or so her Wikipedia page claims.

We can't trust women to moderate debates. They would clearly be too distracted by an internal debate between family vs. career to be able to present questions in an intelligible manner, and also they would be highly distracting to the candidates, such that all answers would devolve into "I think we should boobs the boobs boobs." Also I hate them. Come discuss the matter further with me at the Men's Rights section of Reddit!

Have Sarah Palin moderate a debate.

Nothing says Moderate like Sarah "My Whole Life Is A Reality Show" Palin.

Hey, what about Gwen Ifill? Why has no one mentioned her or explained her absence from this discussion? Not one mention of her in the article or this comments thread. Very strange.

a web search would prolly sort the gewn ifill comments. it seems that since gwen wrote a book about pbama
( http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/18/books/… ) she may not be in the running to moderate a debate between mitt and barack..
.. yeah.. we on a first name basis around here.. just short of calling them 'mittens' and b-rocka'

The correct term is "moderatrix".

Treating the VP debate like it doesn't count seems a bit odd to me, but Gwen Ifil did a perfectly ok job with it, so letting her moderate one of the presidential ones this cycle seems like a fine idea.
