@ 3 - Starting salary looks to be ~64k -- emergencies, protests, festivals, campaign stops, etc., would add dependable overtime.…

Maybe it won't be their starting wage, but if the same cop stays in that position for a long time they'll be receiving planned raises.

They report the total amount paid for cops, not the salary. So that includes medical, dental, vacation, sick leave, retirement benefits match (same as most private firms give, really), and a fairly strong disability and life insurance component (for a very risky job, duh).

Don't believe the fake "cops make too much" "stats". They're pretty worthless.

Let's take some guys fresh out of a warzone and put them in charge of policing our citizens. Great idea. What could possibly go wrong?

@6 I really hope that's tongue-in-cheek.

Not everyone that comes home from war is scarred mentally, and they have this hiring process that is used to help make sure the transition is done properly.

The guy who shot John T. Williams was a veteran.

@8 thank you and @6, there have been studies done on veteran's coming back from a war zone to be police. And many times the results aren't....well pretty. Not ALL the time and not all of them are going to snap but they are more likely to if they haven't acclimated to civilian life properly.

But it's just another sign of the militarization of our police forces.

@3, Seattlebikeguy wrote, "Do cops really make over $100k a year?" The majority of Seattle Police Department's officers are paid more than $100,000 per year.
