I think it's strange that you were asked that question given that the Stranger always features sexy photos of half-dressed women, often on the cover. Most of the Hump promotional ads & article pics feature women for some annoying reason.

But yeah, it's a gross photo (and she looks like she doesn't exactly want it to be happening). There's this whole trend of young male photographers & editors acting like Dov Charneys & Terry Richardsons, inserting themselves into the shots so they can molest the girls. To pretend it's edgy and not just blatant male privilege casting couch behavior is bullshit.

Gern Blanston 2
The Stranger cover was a parody of that Rolling Stone Janet Jackson cover from way back when, was it not?

@2 - INDEED!!!…

@1 - Do you remember a Stranger cover, specifically, with a sexy half dressed woman?…

#3, you're kidding, right? I only went back as far as 2009, but I can name several:

How many in that time period aside from last week's had a sexy half-naked dude? One: 9/24-9/30/2009. And even that one featured a girl with her boobs half out.

@4 - fair enough - it's disproportionate with men vs women, sure.

None were created with the "now, take your shirt off!" art direction that Esquire or GQ magazines require though. That is a different animal completely.

Well, except maybe HUMP... HUMP photos don't count though, due to context of the usage. Those photos have half naked folks, having fun at a photoshoot (I was there, very time), to happily promote our film festival, that promotes people having fun with sex, and being sex positive...

Lastly - I think you're great, and it's great to look out for these things!

#5, Thanks! I think you, Bree and Emily are great, too, and that you've done a lot to totally improve Line Out's coverage of female artists.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk. I've just been reading for a long time and I've always thought it was weird (and annoying) that a magazine with such a large gay male readership does tend to focus much more on the hot girls in photos. I assume it's because it moves more copies among the larger population.

I'm honestly surprised anyone would have even asked you that question, because it sounds so bizarre to me, at least taken out of context. Do people ever ask you that about the girls on your covers?

You don't sound like a jerk... I think we're all a little numb to how little coverage women musicians get, and how many times pretty women make covers...

Sadly, people never ask about girls on covers. I especially wish they would this week.…
Those are lady friends of mine, who are in love, and really engaged to be married.

it's weird that this post had followed this one...…

...where there is a disgusting flyer of some anonymous woman (blocked out eyes are punk, bro!) with a mouth dripping blood and a gun next to her face, and no one says a word about it. say what you will about the implied rape-y-ness of the GQ shoot (if this were an add for a Scotch, I'd be livid), the overt misogyny AND implied rape-y-ness in that flyer shouldn't automatically get a pass. is it because you guys are in the tank for the bands on this bill and you're giving away tickets? what say you?

Holy fucking shit. Who made that image? There's so much promotional stuff always in front of my face, I didn't even look at that flyer. Or really read the post at all.

Now if I had made thepost, that'd be ridiculous and sad.

yeah it'd be unfair of me to call you out for that when it wasn't even your post. still, it bums me out when you guys don't seem to have your house in order before throwing stones elsewhere.

but how can The Stranger get their "house in order", when when a big chunk of their ad revenue is derived from the exploitation of women?
