@3 I would not be worried. Santorum's status as a right-wing religious kook is very well cemented in American politics and culture. If he couldn't beat out Mitt fucking Romney for the nod in 2012, there's no way he's even coming close in the future.

The downside of Romney losing is that vast swaths of the GOP are now convinced that they simply didn't nominate someone who is conservative enough.

The problem, which the Republicans have clearly identified, is that they didn't nominate anyone crazy loony batshit enough to win. They can't possibly lose if Santorum, Bachmann, Herman Cain and the Donald REALLY speak their minds next time.

@15 Exactly. Romney was the most presentable of a whole slew of losers. And he was the worst candidate trotted out by any party since Harding. Team Rape hasn't learned. They're base is dying, and they'll have far less voters for their wingnut ideas than they did this time around. No amount of the CEC will change that.

@6, I'm not seeing the downside there. I want the GOP to nominate the craziest lunatic they can find. If I can't have Todd Akin, I'll go with Santorum. And, you know, even if he doesn't get it, the more bruising the primary fight, the happier I'll be. Obama got a huge boost from Newt Gingrich et al's spirited attacks on Romney.

Post Sarah Palin, running for president in the GOP is now just one long Reality-TV show. The "candidates" milk it for pundit spots, book deals, and speaking engagements. Almost none of them are remotely electable or qualified.
