Why are they so controversial? Did you forget who is running the country again?

Because that could be me someday. I'm not wealthy right now, but I plan to be. Why would I shoot my future-self in the foot?

Yep.

Any day now, I'm just going to start making boatloads of money.

*whistling*

It's also why I'm fine with more restrictions on the poor. I mean, I'll certainly never be that way. I'm not lazy.

65 percent of voters, not 65 percent of major Republican campaign donors. There's your answer.

To be clear, there are only three likely ways you will become rich, @2.

1. Inherit it.

2. Steal it (or lie/cheat/insider).

3. Save and invest more than 10 percent of your income. This includes schooling.

If you're not doing one of those, it is highly unlikely you will ever become rich, and if you do (lottery), you will almost certainly lose almost all of it within 5-10 years.

Just ask Bernie Madoff.

Republican intransigence on this issue is what made my self-hating conserva-queer self unable to vote for them. I could live with being a second class citizen if they would just tell Grover Norquist to fuck off.

Because, according to the Constytooshun, as soon as I hits my Mega-Millions jackpot, I am GARONTEED an invite from the Koch brothers into the "One Percenters Club", where I can eat lobster and swill champagne all day long from the navel of an Oscar-winning Hollywood starlet, but only if I never, ever, EVER mention raising taxes on the wealthy, otherwise, they won't let me in!

They aren't. But, David Gregory and the rest of the Hampton house owning talking heads want us to believe that poor and old people need to suffer for the sins of the Job Creators. It's called "shared sacrifice".

@5 It should come as no surprise that Will's sarcasm detector is on the fritz.

I'm about as shocked at that as I am with the Republican intransigence on tax cuts for the wealthy no matter what percent of the voters support getting rid of said cuts.

Aspies (or whatever the DSM-V will be calling them) are notorious for their lack of sensitivity to social cues: sarcasm, boredom, irritation, edging toward the nearest door or window, facial tics revealing a barely-concealed desire to deliver a bop on the head, what-have-you.

Would be interesting to ask the follow up question of "Why?" to the 65% of people who want the tax hike. That might help Paul understand why it's controversial.

Who gives a fuck what republicans want? They're powerless to stop tax rates from rising. They'll either vote along with the dems and allow rates for the wealthy to go up, or they'll do nothing and the tax rates will automatically go up.

Either way, the republicans are neutered on this issue. Whatever they say about it is worthless.

65%?

are you sure that's all?

after all, making someone else pay taxes you are not willing to pay yourself is a pretty sweet deal.

they used to call it 'taxation without representation'.

now its just called socialism.

and it is a no-brainer for the Left.

(damn good thing, it being a no-brainer, that is...)

stealing from the producing class is the only way to supplement what the Democraps steal from their children and grandchildren.....

@13: Rich people have the same voting rights as poor people. It's taxation WITH representation, you idiot.

@13 & 14

you're impressively full of shit today. you've already stated that you want to see the tax cuts for wealthy people to expire, and that you would like it if the rest of the Bush tax cuts went away in addition. just because you don't want that money to be spent helping people doesn't change that fact.

but, hey...don't let that stop you from being a contrarian asshole. it's not like we aren't you're only friends or anything.
