I voted for "Pixels punching pixels is the sound of the culture dying" because it sounds so poetic.

My reaction is a Meh, unless I know more of the story.

Ok, that just sounds like an annoyingly overused plot device. The world is in danger and the only people to save it are two washed up heros who unite as mankind's last hope or something.

Meh, it's just a bigger budget Tokusatsu, with better FX than your typical episode of Ultraman or the Chouseishin series.
And FYI to all you Portal II fans: Ellen McLain, the voice of GladOS and the computer in "Pacific Rim" lives in Seattle, along with her husband, John Patrick Lowrie, who is himself an accomplished voice actor (Agent Gray in The Matrix Online, The Sniper in Team Fortress 2, Beleram in LOTR: War In The North, et al.)

@5- You really can't deny they robot design, the howling alien, etc... look awfully familiar.
I'm really on the fence because the trailer has zero actually fight footage, making me think the fights look worse than the undecipherable nonsense from the Transformers franchise.

Why do CGI robots always look like that?
I know why spaceship models in the 70s and 80s all look the same. They had to make the surfaces of every model look like a jumbled mess to avoid reflections of the lights and cameras and the gaffer's best boy person whatever. Those guys standing around the model.
But now we have this great CGI and all we do is make the same dark, greasy looking robots. You can't see a damn thing. It's like the golden age of film, when they used cuts and shadows and framing to hide the wires and the shitty costume the guy was wearing. Now we have this great technology and they still don't have anything for you to look at but smoke and haze and lights glaring in your eyes.

@17 - It's the only one I've ever seen, and everyone keeps telling me that exact same thing. All that tells me is that you better not try to trick me into seeing any more Blade movies unless you want to get hurt.

@27 - I'd guess maybe a wide shot would tick off our innately human sense for not-quite-rightness. Either than or the people that make these movies grew up loving anime and all its fast-slow-fast/close-up/pull-shot/cutaway blah blah blah action direction.
Also, I'm down to watch some big budget monster fights as much as the next person... but it still bugs me that these—presumably organic—monsters are always so damn indestructible. Missiles impacting with little effect. F-18s bouncing off monster arms like footballs. We've all seen television war coverage of actual things actually blowing up. I have little doubt our puny human weapons wouldn't make short work of an invading monster army.

At first I thought it looked like an awesome live action version of Shogun Warriors, but the 002 designation on the battle suit pod really does make it look like a modern take on EVA.

@23 how about the fact that Evangelion is in itself an homage-retelling of much older giant robots vs monsters stories. The rage towards Eva in this case is well placed. Now, you want to say "live action Mazinger-Z" and you would be perfectly fine.

If this helps Valve get the funding for the console that they're working on (not that they're in need of money at this point), I don't hate it.

Like a lot of recent trailers, this looked like good stoopit fun until the Happy Meal toys came in. That's when I lose all interest.

@35- Well I'm going to have to confess to having only watched three giant robot series (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Voltron and Robotech) and two of those when they were on TV a couple decades ago.

Well, I don't want to get punched in the nads, so I'll refrain from saying that it totally looks like Evangelion. Instead, I will ask a question ENTIRELY unrelated to this trailer, which is: whatever happened to that live-action Evangelion that WETA Digital was working on a year or two ago?

It looks like it'll be good fun, but I'm sad that the robots don't have giant laser swords. Or just giant regular swords. Punching aliens just doesn't have the same kewl factor as chopping aliens in half.
