Over the years we've noticed that New York bands-even the ones that don't pull karaoke singers from the crowd-are disproportionately shticky and ironic, often dressing in tennis outfits or matching Speedos or like Victorian strippers. My theory is that irony insulates these bands against failure. They want to be famous, but just in case it never happens, they can always take off their costumes, fall back on their Wesleyan diplomas, and say, we were just kidding.
