wait, she shopped only at goodwill for a year!? As in she never purchased food/gas/phone service/anything from any other place than goodwill? I call bs on that unless she meant only clothes or some bullshit

Helluva lot easier than only eating and drinking beverages from Goodwill for a year.

While it is true that Starbucks here are a little different than elsewhere, she's an idiot. The money she spends will most likely not be going to part-time employee benefits or community outreach.

Starbucks, you really need to announce a 25-story building next to Lake Union, with a thatched roof and a free community bicycle rack. The Stranger and "progressive" Seattle would love you again.

Starbucks has fruit other healthy options. They aren't necessarily good, and they're definitely more expensive than buying food at a grocery store and preparing it yourself, but, unless she's really stupid about it, she should get through this year just fine.

They might not have been rolled-out nationwide, but the salads (likely from their Evolution Fresh spin-off) that some Seattle Starbuckses are selling now are incredibly delicious. They alone make this scheme sound much more doable.

She should spend a year trying to not be an attention-whore. Now THAT would be a challenge for her!

Meh. Fruit plate, turkey sandwich, black coffee. Probably healthier than most Americans eat. Actually, I'd wager it's far healthier. Could be cheaper, too. Doritos can run four bucks a bag these days.

@19 - thanks for being the only voice of reason. The rest of you knuckleheads - feel better about your own lives yet? No? Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find some other 'attention whore' who's never done anything to you to mock and criticize - for what reason, exactly?

@5 My thoughts exactly. I'm sure she meant only "durable goods" from Goodwill, which isn't really that big a deal. I mean, I bet we all could go a year without buying any durable goods, if needs be.

@19, definitely NOT cheaper. The report I read says she's averaging $19/day at Starbucks, which is about $7k a year. As the reporter pointed out, the average american woman spends $3k/year on food. (It'd be interesting to see how those budget numbers compare with just Seattle-based women, but I'm still guessing $7k/year in food is steeper than buying groceries and, ya know, cooking.

The woman can do whatever she wants, and as noted above, she could do much worse than Starbucks for a year. But I also think she sounds like a pretentious bore, being interviewed by an obviously content starved website.. The whole thing sounds like an episode of a corporate version of Portlandia.
