Interesting to think about all the hate and disgust some of these women were met with because of the colors they chose to mark their skin with. Much of the art appears to be of pretty high quality, too.

I love my ink. I got my first one at 19. My room mate got a bunch of people to chip in and got it for me for Xmas. The now famous Vyvyn Lazonga was the artist, back when she was just starting out and working out of her dining room.

I think the preferred term is "tattoo artist". They use it in the article but not in the captions for some reason.
