107 House Democrats sent a letter to President Obama calling on him to oppose any entitlement benefit reductions, including switching to the so-called chained CPI:
"We write to affirm our vigorous opposition to cutting Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits in any final bill to replace sequestration. Earned Social Security and Medicare benefits provide the financial and health protections necessary to keep individuals and families out of poverty. Medicaid is not only a lifeline for low-income children, pregnant women, people with disabilities and families, it is the primary source of long-term care services and supports for 3.6 million individuals. We cannot overstate their importance for our constituents and our country.
That is why we remain deeply opposed to proposals to reduce Social Security benefits through use of the chained CPI to calculate cost-of-living adjustments. We remain committed to making the changes that will extend solvency for 75 years, but Social Security has not contributed to our current fiscal problems and it should not be on the bargaining table.
Similarly, we oppose proposals to increase Medicare cost-sharing requirements or to raise the age of eligibility. Half of all Medicare recipients live on less than $22,000 a year – yet they spend, on average, three times as much of those limited incomes on health care as other Americans. Raising their already heavy cost-sharing burden or increasing the age of eligibility doesn’t lower health care costs, it just shifts them to those who can least afford more financial burdens – seniors, people with disabilities and their families."
Out of the entire Washington state congressional delegation, only Jim McDermott signed the letter. Why is the state Dem party cautioning candidate like DelBene, who are less than sanguine about protecting the social safety net?

I like the idea of taking the onus of preventing rape off the potential victims and putting it on society. Just ticking off a list of things that women should do and leaving it at that does make it seem like it's their problem, not ours.
I'm just not sure what that is supposed to sound like. Since we do still have this problem, there's no avoiding the fact that you have to take care of yourself. Maybe before telling women they must be alert and carry a cell phone, we should preface that with an admission that the reason they have to do these things is that we've so far failed in our basic duty as a civilization.
Oh, and these so-called superheroes aren't the solution to anything either. I thought that fad was over.

I do not understand the mindset that allows priests (and their superiors) to justify hiding child abuse from authorities. Is it that they feel they're outside the jurisdiction of the law as they service a "higher power," or a more pragmatic effort to save face (which has clearly backfired again and again)? Such incidents seem to only highlight the corrupt nature of the organization, as well as God's repeated lack of power to punish evil and/or interest in His children's well-being.

Phoenix Jones' sidekick is actually Purple Reign. I'm pretty sure she'd get sued by Prince if she called herself Purple Rain. Although the UW might have the trademark on Purple Reign as well.

The prime sponsor, Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, also condemned the search provision in his own bill, after I asked him about it. He said Palmer is right that it’s probably unconstitutional.Why do we tolerate this level of incompetence from Seattle's delegation?
