they must feel they have the votes to stop anything from changing. and they probably do.

Hey, and maybe for once the American voter will punish lawmakers who vote against gun control measures. Until this happens, and the voter starts holding lawmakers accountable, it does not matter what the NRA does or says. Because we will just be in stasis on the issue.

Ask the tobacco lobby how "powerful" it is now that they have zero public support. They spend more time and money than the NRA could ever hope to, and can't get anything done on the hill.

It is hard to see now, but the NRA used to be fairly reasonable. I think the Brady Bill and the AWB snapped them like a rubber band. As Eli notes, they once supported universal background checks, or at least they claimed to publicly. I have a feeling a lot of people remain in the NRA because they simply send those dues every year like any other bill, and do not really pay attention to what the NRA says or does.

Hopefully the spotlight can change that.

The SLOG is representative of obvious social engineering. Years ago, the STRANGER was known for being alternative and freedom-loving. Looks like this paper was purchased by some hell-bent socialist who has an infatuation with humping the legs of central bankers and their corrupt communitarian agendas. Fuck you, Stranger. Yes, fuck you very much.

@2: The best thing the administration can do is continue to state, clearly and consistently, that they're not interested in removing guns from the hands of legal gun owners, and why measures like background checks will make everyone, including gun owners, safer. They've done a pretty good job with keeping things rational so far, and I hope that continues. The NRA doesn't have the power it used to, even among 2nd Amendment proponents, and I think both they and the administration know it.

Where or where is the ACLU in protecting THIS Constitutional Right?

Oh wait, that's right, they are a special interest group and don't do that...

The NRA learned if you give 'em an inch, they will take a mile with "gun control." So it is off to the barricades against y'all gun grabbing tyrants. Go NRA!

@3: Fascinating, but it does seem like even with the "break" between the old guard and new guard, they at least were not storming Washington until the late 80s. Imagine what the organization would be like if they kept their focus on conservation and sportsmen. That whole story reads surprisingly similar to the current fractures in the Republican party.

Also, I had no idea the NRA offered gun liability insurance with membership. Funny, because that is one of the things I see a lot of people here on Slog arguing for.

@7 The rub is that the NRA openly bribes lawmakers to make sure there is no liability for gun owners.

@6 Good ol' fashioned American paranoia at its finest!

"If we have universal background checks, the next step is CONFISCATING ALL GUNS."

"If we legalize same-sex marriage, the next step is PEOPLE FUCKING HORSES IN CHURCH."

"If we let Michelle Obama promote healthy eating, the next step is NO DESSERT FOR ANYONE EVER."

It must be fun to live in your head. Seems so much more chaotic and exciting than plain, boring reality.

@ 9, I see the rich fantasy life some people like @ 6 have, and weep that they aren't putting it to good use creating art or fiction instead.

@10 - oh but they are putting it to good use. They work for Faux News and have all their fantastical visions turned into "news" stories.

@6, read the Constitution, it's a collective right not an individual right. Second, the NRA used to represent gun owners and be in favor of reasonable restrictions. Now, the NRA is funded by and represents the interests of gun manufacturers who they've helped by getting legislation limiting liability for gun violence and stand your ground/vigilante laws. Effectively, the NRA is limiting all our freedoms in the defense of one group of manufacturers. The astroturfing is not required, the NRA is already winning the legislative war, although they are planning new legislative victories after the 2014 election.

@1:

And of course, once the restrictions are voted down (thanks to the members of Congress the NRA is either bribing, black-mailing - or both), they'll point to the "no" vote as "proof" that "the people do not support these anti-Second Amendment regulations".

@12 biffp. You are one ignorant-of-the-Constitution-MFer...

That is pure, unadulterated, bullshit about it being a collective right.

Look up the recent Heller case and then get back to me on why the Supreme Court found that it is QUITE the opposite of your statement.

And as for the NRA, they are fighting for YOUR rights to keep and bear arms too my homie. Whether you choose to or not is your problem.

Actually, it's MacDonald v. Chicago that rules on that issue, but you were close.
