DABRYE ON THE DECKS, FOR A CHANGE
Ghostly International OG producer Dabrye (aka Tadd Mullinix) is best known for his Prefuse 73–like mutations of hiphop constructions. On releases like One/Three, Two/Three, and Instrmntl, Dabrye sends neck-snapping beats ricocheting beneath warped, jazz-inflected melodies, electro-informed bleeps, and brainy, bloody-knuckled raps from MCs like Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Vast Aire, and Beans. But it's been a while since Dabrye's issued any new original productions—the last being a split 7-inch with Mike Slott in 2009, if we can believe Discogs.com. For this tour, Dabrye is DJing, which I didn't know he did. But Mullinix used to work at Ann Arbor vinyl emporium Encore Records, so he surely can boast a sick collection and deep knowledge. The smart promoters of the Everything Electric weekly event have booked elite local selectors and beatmakers DJAO, WD4D, and Jon François Stone to support. Hosted by Shonuph. THE FIELD'S HYPNOTIC TECHNO
The Field—led by Swedish producer Axel Willner—are becoming one of the most compelling acts in Berlin label Kompakt's strong stable. Their third album's title, the new Looping State of Mind, encapsulates the Field's modus operandi: layering heavenly, wispy vocal samples over undulant pulsations and epic synth whorls. The results sound like what My Bloody Valentine or Cocteau Twins might be doing if they were 21st-century Scandinavians immersed in European underground club culture. With Looping State of Mind and 2009's Yesterday and Today, the Field have beefed up their beats and low end to something approaching funk-rock specifications. Even with this earthier foundation, the Field's music soars like a flock of the world's most majestic birds—but instead of pooping on your head, it drops cascading bliss tones, providing one of the headiest escapism soundtracks available in the dance scene. INFECTED MUSHROOM'S FUN-GUY TRANCE
Israeli psych-trance fixtures Infected Mushroom have moved to LA, which has given them easier access to collaborators like Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell and Korn's Jonathan Davis. Consequently, they've added more rock and downtempo elements to their widescreen, 4/4 juggernauts, which has culminated in a remix of the Doors' "Riders on the Storm." With R3hab, Hyperfunk, Kryspin.
