FRIDAY 3/16

LUCKY 2012 SHAMROCKS WAMU THEATER

Lucky 2012 is one of those voluminous dance parties with a few well-known names, some past-their-peak underground heroes, and a smattering of mediocrities who are content to play the earlier time slots. Getting top billing is Scotland's Calvin Harris, a purveyor of airbrushed, vocalcentric electroclash that's like a douchebag's idea of what New Order's most clubworthy tracks sound like. The best thing about Harris is the ludicrousness of his 2007 album title, I Created Disco. Perhaps of more interest are Goldie and Ed Rush & Optical, key figures in the UK's '90s drum 'n' bass heyday. Goldie has always been a better label boss (see Metalheadz) than a DJ/producer, but his charisma and smart track selections should carry him through this show. Ed Rush & Optical? If this were 1998, I'd be obnoxiously waxing hyperbolic about their dark-side, brutally cerebral techstep dubplates. In 2012, their steez sounds a bit stodgy, but it can still pummel excitingly and chill marrow in small doses. With ATB, Adventure Club, Flux Pavilion, Porter Robinson, Hardwell, and others. WaMu Theater, 7:30 pm–3:30 am, $45–$100, 18+.

SHIFT TURNS 5 WITH UK DUBSTEP HEAVIES THE OTHERS

The dubstep torchbearers of Shift celebrate their fifth anniversary tonight with headliners the Others, a London duo who deal in an ominous, methodically brutal brand of sub-bass carpet bombing—but they're kind of subtle and artful with it... which is refreshing compared to some infamous American producers, who shall remain nameless. With the whole Shift crew. Contour, 10 pm, $5 for men and free for women before 11 pm/$10 after, 21+.

SATURDAY 3/17

MARK FARINA MUSHROOM JAZZES NEUMOS

If you like your St. Patrick's Day with some soulful and deceptively edgy Chicago house music, you should get your ass to Neumos for Mark Farina's annual Seattle throwdown, which also marks promoters Uniting Souls' 15th anniversary. He's best known for his Mushroom Jazz mix franchise, but Farina's renowned by true heads for his sophisticated, funky house sets that draw on his doctorate-level knowledge of the genre's deepest specimens. With Pezzner, Michael Manahan, Ramiro, Deep Vibez, Jeromy Nail, guests. Neumos, 9 pm, $15, 21+.
