Space Cretins guitarist Otis P. Otis is a slender, inky-haired fellow who's regularly seen perusing the jukebox at El Chupacabra. He remembers checking out his relative's record collections when he was younger. "I found some of my uncle's old records when I was a kid. There were a bunch, but the ones I remember were Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company and Their Satanic Majesties Request by the Rolling Stones with the original 3-D cover," he says. "I thought that was the coolest shit and when I listened to 'em I was done!"

A certifiable veteran of the Northwest punk scene, Otis is always ready with an entertaining, old-school yarn. "I was playing with Napalm Beach in Portland and ended up at this after-hours jam with Duff McKagen and Johnny Thunders," he recalls. "Johnny was playing this pink contact paper-covered guitar, but he wanted mine. I had bought [mine] from [Dead Moon's] Fred Cole—I wasn't just going to give that away," he laughs. "We traded guitars and his roadie wrote me out a contract for the balance, but I never saw [the money]." HANNAH LEVIN
