A few months ago, I sang the praises of "spring" music—the music I listen to when the trees start to bloom and the days are full of sun and rain and clouds battling for position. Spring music is great, sure, but summer music is even better—louder, faster, and brighter. It's music you want to dance to (or thrash around to) and the sweatier you get, the better. It's best when blasting out of car speakers while being sung along to at embarrassing volumes on road trips down the coast.
With my iPod, I have the ability to make play-lists in seconds, and I've formulated the perfect summer mix. There's pop, rock, punk... and yeah, there's both Rancid and Operation Ivy. I couldn't have one without the other, especially since the Rancid song "Journey to the End of the East Bay" is all about Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman's time in the beloved and short-lived pre-Rancid project. It's kind of cool to hear 'em back to back.
Stranger Personals
There are also new songs from just-released records (Against Me!, the Polyphonic Spree), classics (the Clash, the Vaselines, Jawbox), and some old and new favorite locals (Sicko, Lake of Falcons). And hopefully there's a song or two you already love, but also a few new surprises.
It goes a little something like this:
1. Sicko – "The Sprinkler"
2. Mclusky – "To Hell with Good Intentions"
3. Against Me! – "Thrash Unreal"
4. The Polyphonic Spree – "Running Away"
5. Lake of Falcons – "Pretty Little Knife"
6. The Hold Steady – "Stuck Between
Stations"
7. Operation Ivy – "Soundsystem"
8. Rancid – "Journey to the End of the
East Bay"
9. The Vaselines – "Son of a Gun"
10. Sweet Water – "Superstar"
11. Jawbox – "Jackpot Plus"
12. The Clash – "I'm Not Down"
Pretty great, if I do say so myself. It lifts spirits; the energy matches the sun. And just like last season, I want to give you guys copies because music is more fun when shared with friends, and I consider each and every one of you a close personal friend (with that said, way to forget my birthday, asshole).
Want one? Yeah? Send me your mailing address (megan@thestranger.com) and do it quick. Last time there wasn't enough to go around (I'm that popular). Bonus points if you include a list of what your summer sounds like. I'm always down to hear something new.
