In the priceless paintings of Klimt, showers of gold settle
eternally around mythical women. They sell for record prices at
auction. In Coin Drop No. 3 at Westlake Center Mall, the
metallic shower lasts only a second before street kids dive on the
scattered pocket change that has come spilling out of a weak cardboard
box. It's about 75 dollars in change, and the artists behind the sudden
explosion are PDL (Jason Puccinelli, Jed Dunkerley, and Greg Lundgren).
There are ancient themes: money and art; and contemporary themes: the
heightened fear of a mysterious burst of noise in a public square.
Coin Drop No. 2 happened in the atrium at Pacific Place. Imagine
the clarity of the sound, and the pleasant friendliness of shoppers
immediately setting aside their bags to help recover every lost penny.
At Westlake Center, the kids and beggars walked off with the bulk of
the booty. Nobody in either place saw any art in the money. ![]()
