Ethan Stowell’s Tavolàta is a home for Italian food, if home were a cavernous loft with scarred and shined wood floors, exposed joists high above, perfect lighting, and an open kitchen and full bar staffed with handsome people. The all-housemade pasta (even the usually factory-made shapes—there’s an extruder in the basement) possesses a fresh, springy, bouncy quality and a texture that’s less slick, more sauce-sticky and absorptive of flavor. It is pasta that demands profanity: It is fucking fantastic.

Tavolàta's monthly Sunday Feast can be a good deal, with prices varying depending on the star ingredient/menu—though since they're served family-style at the 26-seat communal table, you might want to bring a bunch of friends to insulate you from people who use the word "foodie." Upcoming feasts: Northern Italian, Feb. 10; Strictly Seafood, March 10; Roasted Duck, April 21; Suckling Pig, May 19; Garden Vegetables and Wild Mushrooms, June 9.

Mind Blowing!!

Wow! I can't imagine that anyone would have anything negative to say about this restaurant. Super ambiance, super service, super food, totally amazing! I was with a group of 6 and we did as our server recommended and ordered family style. In this way we were able to sample 6 1st courses, 6 pastas, and then the incredibly delicious 2 pound ribeye steak. The starters were served in portions perfect for sharing, the pastas were each perfectly cooked and seasoned and the steak was above the quality of an expensive steakhouse and much more quantity. I was super impressed and will be a regular at this Belltown joint from now on!

Delicious!

The veal cheeks are amazing. And the pasta is cooked to perfection. Late night dining doesn't get any better....

Gross Food but Nice Ambiance

I got the gnocchi - it was awful. It was basically six small ice-cream shaped scoops of mashed potatoes in a little tureen, covered in tomato sauce & cheese, then baked. That's it. Sort of baked mashed potatoes like your mom might make. My friend got the pasta and it was really bland - no flavor to speak of, and not enough salt either. I wouldn't eat here again.

Late Night Perfection

I'd heard such mixed reactions to Tavolata that I was excited to finally try it for myself. The meal was a home run at midnight. The pasta was hand-crafted excellence. The mussels were cooked perfectly, light and stewing in a lemony, starchy broth. Perfect end to a night of drinking. It was noisy, but the space itself is remarkable and worth checking out.

Are you kidding?

I can't believe that the person writing the Stranger review was in the same place that I went to... and I had the rigatoni! It was bad. It's not that easy to relly screw up a rigatoni dish, but they succeeded. This however was nothing compared to the gnocchi which my date was unfortunate enough to order. It was heavy, mildly to fully burnt and all around diiiiisgusting. The service was mediocre. The cocktails were pretty good and thank god for that. The salad was edible. I'd have that if you are unfortunate enough to get stuck here for any reason.
