Restaurant Details

  • The "other" coast is the East coast (get it?!). Some people say the O.C.C. is overpriced, but six-inch sandwiches cost around $8 each, and half is usually plenty for lunch, and have you noticed how some people will say almost anything is overpriced? The meats are thin-sliced and neither disturbingly glistening nor dry, the lettuce etc. is fresh, and the bread is great (baguette-ish but without that pointy crust that hurts your mouth and makes all the contents squish out). Lindy West reports that the marinara on the big, gooey hot meatball sub is "not too sweet, rich tomato flavor, really good" and that the meatballs are "baseball-sized! HUGE!" The basic turkey and Swiss is also extremely satisfying, and people rave about the Reuben and the Rajun Cajun. Note that, awesomely, the Capitol Hill O.C.C. delivers free with a $15 minimum (and you can order online!).
  • Features: Cheap Eats, Delivery, Family Friendly (nice to babies) and To Go
  • Cuisine: Cafe and Deli/Sandwiches

Heaven!

Truly. Wandering down the street, I stopped to read the menu on the door of the Other Coast. Hot veggie rueben! *awesome* This is probably the best veggie rueben I’ve ever had, and I’ve been hunting them down for about two decades. They thinly shave the protein (menu says seitan, but it seems almost field-roast-like) and have all the fixins. It even comes on toasted rye bread, not a baguette as the menu says. While I might ask for lighter mustard the next time, it was AmaZING – everything a good deli sandwich should be but never is in a vegetarian form. Plus, the chocolate chip cookie could be the best in the city, and I don’t take my cookies lightly. For the past year, I’ve been driving far across town for what had been the top……before today. Not anymore. Now, I just have to skip across the Ballard Bridge. Thanks, Other Coast, for the most delightful lunch! [David Schmader, forget GLC and come here for a veggie rueben. You won’t be disappointed.]
