No one ever admits to liking Mama's Mexican Kitchen, but it's been in Belltown since 1974, dishing out enormous, cheese-smothered combo plates and strong margaritas with a side of Elvis-kitsch.
My husband and I have worked in the restaurant business our entire adult lives. We have both been to Mama's before, food good, atmosphere fun, service good *once* the other times mediocre. But the place is fun, the food is decent and cheap enough, and who doesn't like Mexican. We will NEVER set foot in this place again. Went there on Valentine's day (just wanted a relaxing simple evening). Our female server (dark hair, 20s-30s, hat, tattooed) obviously hated that both she and we were there. Rude from the get-go, every word coming out of her mouth dripping with snide sarcasm. We were still friendly and tried to lighten up the conversation, knowing what it is like to wait tables and thinking she might just be having a bad day. My husband ordered a beer and a shot, I ordered a top shelf margarita. 5 minutes later she slams his beer on the table (bottle, no glass). ONLY his beer. We watch her to bring out one thing at a time for each table, moving as slow as humanly possible. She has been sat a 10 top that is sitting behind us. FIFTEEN minutes after she has dropped the beer (yes we have been there 20 minutes, and no this is not an exaggeration, I had looked at the time as soon as we sat down and again when we left), still no other drinks nor has she returned at all to our table...and now she is walking over to the 10 top (who has been sitting there for 10+ minutes) to take their order. We got up and walked out. That woman should not be doing any line of work that involves interacting with other human beings. When I went into work the next day (yes I am telling anyone and everyone this story) at the restaurant that I work at, one of my co-workers relayed a similar story and described a server that sounded just like ours and who had also been totally rude. That Mama's seems to pride itself on employing people like this is a shame. We will never set foot in that place again and will tell everyone (restaurants, theatre, facebook, you name it) to avoid this place like the plague. Unless you like giving your money away and having a crappy time. Btw, YAY for the Matador in Ballard where we went after we left that had the BEST food, atmosphere and service (btw, Mama's server, we gave her $30 on $120..remember we are restaurant people..you might want to think about the fact that you never know who you are waiting on and have a little gratitude for your job and the people who pay your bills).
If you're a pompous ass, you shouldn't be going to Mama's in the first place. However, if you want super tasty relatively cheap Mexican food in a hip laid-back atmosphere, give this place a shot. One of the best burritos in Seattle, great Sope's as well. My only complaint is hands-down the worst Margaritas in Seattle.

This place simply rocks. Not only is the food actually quite good, it's a fun place to eat to boot. I'm bred, born, and raised, in San Diego. (Been here 20 years though) I know Mexican food, I crave great mexican food, I deeply desire Momma's Mexican Kitchen.
Early on in our dating, I took my now fiance' to the Elvis room. She loved it, still loves me, and I am a Hunka Hunka burnin' in love with her.
As always, with Momma's, there's too much food, too much cheeze, and too great a staff. If you don't eat here, you will miss one of the last truly Seattle experiances.

This not only the worst Mexican I've ever eaten but quite possible one of my worst eating out experience - ever. A couple months ago my workplace catered from here. I tried to warn them but they thought I was being picky. During and after eating there was not one complimentary thing said about the food only upset stomachs and a ton of leftovers.

I SWEAR I saw my server put our uneaten chips and salsa back into rotation for the next table. I am never, ever going there again. I puked a bit in my own mouth.

That this restaurant continues to draw good reviews amazes me. In a city filled with mediocre-to-terrible Mexican restaurants, Mama's is pretty bad. Everything tastes canned. It's a good place to drink, but any other restaurant within a stone's throw is as well, with better food. Mama's = crap.

Hands-down the worst Mexican restaurant I've had the misfortune of eating at. The tacos I ordered were nowhere near authentic, which I can usually let slide, but they were also bland, flavorless, and somehow burned and soggy at the same time. The refried beans had clearly been cooked too long as well, as there was a layer of hardened bean-like substance on the top. Avoid unless you're looking for cheap-ish, decent margaritas at happy hour.
Well, I have usually at least had good service here before, but not this time. It is hard to blame the server - he apologized for the lack of execution repeatedly. But it wasn't a fun experience, to say the least.
I order a simple quesidia, with black beans. The server said it should have been on my table in about 3 minutes - 30 minutes later, he is mumbling something about a to go order of 100 tacos that the kitchen was busy preparing - to the apparent dismay of multiple customers seated in the place. I guess $$$ of the nice to go order out weighs people who wanted to eat in the place. To make matters worse, once the 30 minute wait on this simple order had transpired, I had to send it back - there wasn't hardly any cheese or black beans on it - very sloppily done. So I wait another 10-15 minutes for a replacement. And they charged me full price for this fiasco - over $9 for a lousy quesidia, and side of guac - nothing off for getting screwed. I still had to tip the waiter, as he did at least apologize numerous times - but I got screwed, Mama's. Shame.

The only people who hate Mama's are health snobs and people who eat at Chevys Fresh Mex. If it's "fresh mex"... it's not Mex. Its good old no frills (and cheap) Mexican, and that is the best kind. The grilled fish tacos are amazing! Mama's is one of the biggest reasons I miss living in Belltown, and all my out of town family and friends always want to go there. Love it.

I love Mama's. While it might be THE BEST mexican in town, their salsa is great and the Fajitas are awsome. They make a great Cadillac Margarita as well. And the atmosphre is great. I love the Elvis room.

This place makes me homesick for the greasy, spicy, cheezy, cholesterol-loaded deliciousness that is the small, family-run Mexican restaurants of Southern California that I used to love. The kitch is super cool and the paintings are gorgeous. The decor itself is half the fun of going to Mama's Mexican.
Mama's Mexican captures the essence of good, greasy Mexican food from the heart of Tiajuana, rivaling the Taco Trucks around Seattle (which I would curl up and die without!). The food kicks ass-- the plates are massive and full of everything BAD, which makes them oh so good.
The only improvement is that the margaritas could use a little mas tequila, por favor! La comida esta muy bien! Me guataria!

Sadly this place is a lot like the rest of Belltown. You go there for the atmosphere not the food. But the Elvis named carne asada burrito (even thought its not carne asada) is great and more then sobering for any early evening drunk.

so i'll admit not everything on the menu is great . . . but their salsa is, and that is key! their margs are also damn good! and let's not forget that they are pretty cheap to boot. stick with the nolasco (minus the ranchero sauce) and you'll be fine.

Don't come here expecting great Mexican food... come here expecting to be able to get your party of eight seated. Then order a couple margaritas so you don't have to taste the food.

A ha ha! I love seeing the crowds of tongueless hipsters here. This is the worst Mexican restaurant in the world, people. The food is terrible! It's like eating hot dog food, drowning in melted cheese! Why on earth do you go here?
