The Hopvine is a nice, low-key neighborhood place for the hale, Northwesty set, with a good selection of microbrews, and the soups are treasured. Special soups change with the season, and longtime chef Michael Congdon also toggles between two habit-forming standbys, which he creates in 200-gallon batches that last about three months. There's the creamy Southwestern pumpkin, which pairs sweet with spicy (cinnamon and cumin, chili powder and maple syrup). And there's the roasted garlic, containing white wine, cream, and loads of crushed herbs, with homemade croutons and cheese for heartiness. People go apeshit for the Hopvine's soups—Congdon says they've asked if they can get them intravenously.

The Hopvine let me down.

I used to enjoy grabbing pints there. Their food has always been good, and their tap list is even better, well except for the times they have four IPAs and one or no stouts. Anyway, I had always felt the staff was nice, and at least somewhat versed in the beer that the sell. This was of course until my experience last week in which I paid a late afternoon visit for a pint and some grub.

I noticed they had the elusive "hubris" IPA by elysian on tap, and I gleefully ordered a pint. The waitress then told me that I could only have a schooner of this beer because the ABV% was too high to serve it as a pint. I asked why a beer under nine percent would be considered a beer to strong to sell a pint of. She then told me it was 11%. I surrendered confused, as I was pretty sure it was only somewhere around 8 or 9. What the hell? I thought... were they afraid that I would get drunk off this beer? Even if I did, it's a bar for god's sake. The beer is actually only 8.7%, not eleven. She then attempted to justify this by stating that hubris means "exaggerated or extreme," which of course is also incorrect. Never have I felt so violated by arrogance and stupidity in a pub.

I then ordered a cup of their garlic soup, which was delicious. I was sitting at the bar, when one of the people working their was chatting with another client. he asked him, "did you taste the anise in the soup?" I quickly chimed in and said, "I tasted anise in mine, it was delicious." He then said to me, "You had the garlic soup, it doesn't have anise in it." I replied, "well some must have gotten into mine, because I tasted it." He then gave me a cruel, disgusted look and then continued talking to the other man at the bar. The entire experience was laden with a passive aggressive disposition from the staff, who clearly know nothing about the beer they serve. I'll never return to the hopvine, which is a true shame... I used to like this spot. That being said, there's much better places to grab pints anyway.

Tasty goddamn food and beer. What more do you whiners want?

Sure, they're a bit understaffed but jesus, you guys want to be waited on hand and foot. Order a beer, relax and fucking chill out. Yeah they get busy, and they might take a while. Its worht the wait. They have the BEST soups on the hill. Awesome fucking pizza and pretty good sanwiches and options for us vegetarians. All you whiners please stay away, thanks!

Proud of our lil pub

I've been going to the hopvine for years now and agree that spending the time to become a regular is worth it. The food is very good and you know what you're going get everytime. On cold nights it's the perfect stop for a beer and a warm cup of soup.

Great soup, asshole waitstaff

I live a few blocks from the Hopvine and love the food there but refuse to deal with the asshole service. I don't require pampering and I don't mind a little snark with my service-- but on almost every occasion I've been here, the servers were dicks. Lousy attitudes and only the most begrudging attempts at filling requests. Pizza, soup, sandwiches, and salads are great-- too bad the staff is so shitty.

I hate the crapvine

This place just straight up sucks. I'll never set foot in there again! Service is just a joke, Ive been ignored and treated with little to no respect every time. The food is weak, I could make better at home. Don't waste your time and money at this wannabe yippie haven.

Ahhh...

I love this place. Not quite a dive, the Hopvine has that homey, lived-in feel that lulls you into staying for hours. It's one of the places that make living near 15th a happy experience. Good beers, good enough wines, tasty sandwiches, and fantastic homemade soups (my favorite is the pumpkin--almost makes the return of the cold weather worth it). I love that when it's sunny you'll see workin' folk out having a beer on the sidewalk "patio". And on Wednesday nights you can hear the sounds of open mike night wafting on the wind like the comforting smell of a lover's ass crack. Go here with a gang of friends and remember why it's nice to get out once in a while.

I (Heart) Hopvine!!

Hopvine is such a great little place, I really don't understand how anyone can complain about it! I have been there several times, and the service is just the same as any other pub on the Hill. Have a beer and relax. Their food is absolutely delish, the pizzas are magical and the bread knots are like crack, but in a good way. Highly addictive though... be warned. I usually go with a few friends, order a pitcher of brew and split a pizza. My favorite is the pizza with apples and gorgonzola cheese... heaven. (I forgot the name of it, D'Oh!) And the veggie pizza is really good, even better if you add meat. I love the variety of beers. The staff is very knowledgable about the different beer, too. The only complaint that my friends and I have about Hopvine is that it gets a little too loud sometimes, especially on Wednesday evenings when they have the open-mike night. If you want a meaningful conversation, you might want to go elsewhere. But if you are in the mood for yummy pizza and good beer, stay and enjoy!

Beer, Beer, Beer, Beer, Beer.

That's what its all about at the Hopvine. this is no ultra-hip joint, but it is overlooked, as it's one of the best small beer bars in Seattle. While I understand that service is an issue (it's an issue at both of the hopvine's sister pubs - the latona and the fiddler's inn - as well) the atmosphere is exceedingly casual and the staff is friendly and engaging, a nice change of pace from so many places in Seattle. The entrees are a bit under-portioned for my appetite, but the soups are delicious and anyone who suggests otherwise simply doesn't appreciate good soup. When I was there yesterday, the two I had were wild mushroom & porcini and chilled strawberry w/ mint. both were excellent and would have easily fit on the menu at any number of fine dining establishments. If you don't want the best soup in seattle coupled with some of the best northwest beers, this is not the place for you. Conversely, if you like those two things as much as I do, you should find yourself pretty happy bellied up to the bar at the Hopvine.

N.B.: Beer and Wine only

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet--the Hopvine doesn't have a full bar; beer and wine only. Lame. This is one of those places I walk by all the time but never went until I was with a group of people and somebody else suggested we go. Turned out my initial instinct was a good one. I had a sandwich, which I suppose was good enough even though it was small, somewhat overpriced, and presented very plainly on a plate that, were it mine, I'd leave outside by the trash with the expectation that even the cheapest dumpster diver wouldn't want a plate that looks dirty even though it's (probably, hopefully,) clean. Those things, and I really wanted a vodka tonic in lieu of some bland microbrew. I can't say I left happy.

Horrible service

I've been to the Hopvine twice now and waited and waited and waited for food. More than half an hour, even when it was just SOUP that they had ready. I watched the staff loitering and chatting in the kitchen, right near the soup, while I sat waiting for over half an hour FOR NO REASON. I won't go back there. When they're that indifferent, I won't give them my business. The soup wasn't anything special either.

If your photo isn't on the wall you get bad service.

It's a kind of place that if you want to invest the time to be a regular you get great service if not you're pretty much out of luck. They're known for their soups and they're pretty good but sometimes they go overboard with ingredients that don't go great together. Nice beer selection.

Best Soup in the Universe, Worst Atmosphere

Go here for lunch as opposed to dinner! Hopvine's soups (particularly the roasted garlic soup) are incredible - but the place tends to be filled with gluts of self-admiring late 30-something top-o-the-hillers anytime after 4pm. The service at lunchtime is very good - but good luck getting help during the rush - the place is too small and either understaffed or just unfriendly. Good beer and soup though!
