Restaurant Details

  • Located in the Thai-food capital of Seattle—where Thai restaurants outnumber baby strollers almost two to one—the casual Kwanjai Thai has earned a reputation as being worth the wait. They're serious about their noodles, soups, and star-spice ratings, and many swear it's the Thai talk of the town in Fremont, which is saying a lot.

split a lunch special on a nice day

While my go-to is Kao Samai, it's nice to sit outside and split a lunch special and people-watch. The soup you get with the meal is my favorite part, and you also get an eggroll and pad thai with your dish. It's very cute and homey.

best Thai food in Fremont

Don't be fooled by the hole-in-the-wall appearance. The food is fresh and yet the service is amazingly fast.

I've only experienced good service-- although it's true that you won't get the (sadly) increasingly typical Fremont experience of feeling like a well-coddled yuppie here. It's popular and sometimes (especially in the summer) crowded. The good food speaks for itself.

Terrible thai place

Bad food. Bad service. Rude people. The only charming thing about this place was the low-cut shirt of the girl in the chair next to me. "It's so cheap!" exclaimed two girls near me. There's reasons for that. No flavor, no seating that doesn't wobble everywhere. Worse - the silverware and dishes weren't clean. Had to send them back. Not worth two dollars - and you get charged ten.

Masochism Thaigo?

I gave it another run. Last night. Still terrible. In point of fact, worse. Rude servers. For the same amount of money I spent, I could have meandered to Kaosumai down the street. If a restaraunt sucks for everything on the menu but a few select items, kiddos, it's NOT A GOOD RESTARAUNT. Bad luck's got nothing to do with it; it's simply a bad place to eat.

Green curry=amazing

I never liked green curry until I came here...SO GOOD. Their coconut soup was great too. Service was a bit on the slow side and I never did get my water refilled, but other than that it was great.

Awesome food with great service

Food at Kwanjai is really good compared to the price. I couldn't find a cheap but great tasting seafood dish in a generous portion anywhere else except at Kwanjai Thai!!! They cook pretty fast too. Let the server know if you want to take your time eating, otherwise the appetizer and main dish will come all at once. The waitress is very attentive in refilling the water and rice. I always had a great experience there!

best Pad-See-Eiuw in Fremont

Don't get the coffee or the swimming rama. At Kwanji, stick with noodle dishes and beers, maybe get the soup if you are feeling lucky. The Pad-See-Eiuw is so good, though, especially with the shrimp (which involves lots of big, juicy pieces, by the way), that you could just go there and order one dish over and over and be forever satisfied. I have had only good, friendly service there. So, sorry to the kid that had a crappy meal there. Bad luck, you ordered the wrong thing.

Death by Bad Thai Food

As soon as I walked in, the waitress swiped a dirty rag over the surface and plunked a three-fourths full plastic glass of water in front of me, shoved a menu at me, and flipped open her little book. Bad sign. First, in a restaurant the size of a postcard, if the waitress can’t remember what one single guest ordered, I expect that the service will likely be terrible. I wasn’t disappointed. The coffee that tasted as if it had been brewed two weeks ago and left in the refrigerator, and a dose of corn syrup added to offset the horrendous aftertaste. The stringy, dry chicken, smothered in tasteless peanut sauce, covered wilted spinach drift over tacky, cold white rice. After the glare of agonizing exasperation I received upon asking for a clean glass, I nearly expected to be charged for the box, and the waitress said “Is everything tasting okay?” only after I had scraped the sticky, gelatinous mess into the Styrofoam box and clamped it shut. Only later did I find out this place had nearly been shut down by the King County Health Department with a score of 73 points on their last health inspection. That’s bad, because at 75, they shutter the place until it gets back to code. I give Kwanjai a zero star rating. Primarily because there’s no “do not eat here” rating. Nothing is less sexy on a first date than food poisoning.
