A Rob Roy is a version of a Manhattan made with Scotch. Rob Roy (1671–1734), the cocktail's namesake, was an outlaw-hero, the Scottish version of Robin Hood. The Rob Roy is a swankish '70s cocktail lounge in Belltown—the kind with stacked flagstone behind the bar, a black-leather-padded wall, low lighting, and general comfiness. Furthermore, it's run by the awesome Anu Apte (of the Washington State Bartenders Guild), and the cocktails are marvelous.

Interesting theme, crappy execution

Don't buy into the bar's description of itself. The decor falls short - mounted deer heads and occasional velvet painting. Drink and food menu makes no sense - stuffed eggs and caprese salad, mac and cheese app's? Wait staff wore t-shirt and tats, not a big deal if you aren't supposed to be in a classy retro lounge.

I agree, the name is better-I do think it sucks that the super corporate hotel the Viceroy forced them into changing their name. That is so the way this country operates-if you have enough money you can do what ever the fuck you want. That is why this country is in the fucking mess it is in, just corporate America bending over the little guy again!

I always hated the name "Viceroy"...the owners made a good decision in changing it to "Rob Roy"... it fits the bar so much better!

icky clientele, coke heads clogging up the guys bathroom

not good, unless you want to score and you like to do coke in overpriced bar bathrooms, I personally dont but whatever floats your boat. I got tired of waiting and just went back every 5 minutes to check to see if the person with four and six feet was done with whatever was going on in there.

A sucker-punch with your cheese platter? Please read...

Viceroy projects the “young-professionals-drinking-savory-martinis” ambiance—not the “inexplicably-assaulted-by-multiple-gangbangers” ambiance. The latter was the case which resulted in my boyfriend's shattered nose, possibly fractured eye socket, and massive medical bills all over one beer and a quiet night out with the chick. Within 15 minutes of the 20+ Braveheart-like brawl, the staff quickly mopped up every last trace of blood (minus his blood-drenched clothing) remounted the sliding glass door (torn off as the fight poured onto 2nd avenue), got the tunes back on and the liquor flowing...business as usual. No one offered us help and, in fact, discouraged a trip to the hospital and argued with me over whether or not my boyfriend's misshapen nose was broken. The reporting employee told responding police that there "were no injuries.” Given lack of assistance, we flagged a cab for the 3 block walk back to our car where I rushed him to Harborview. We had a lovely 6 hour stay where we enjoyed the sights and sounds of gun shot/stabbing victims and a man who was crapping himself and puking every 10 minutes. Yay. Folks, if jeopardizing your life over $8 cocktails and being brushed aside as "bad for business" sounds enjoyable, be my guest. Oh, and make a point to steer clear of Derschang's other fine establishments (Linda’s and Baltic Room) as I'm sure her keen eye for details are just as evident there. You'll feel awesome knowing she values her profit margins and liquor licenses over your well-being. Hey, Linda, thanks!!!

What a disappointment....

After living abroad for 2 years and really excited to spend my 10 days of holiday season drinking my way through the Seattle bar scene, the promise of the Viceroy's "swanky lounge" and "70's themed decor" made it the top place I wanted to go. That Friday I bundled up my girlfriends, got dressed up, and headed out to get my first lemondrop/mojito/anything made with liquor and NOT with sake.... To begin, the Viceroy is small and dark with barely any sitting room. While the leather couches there are supposed to be comfy and sexy, sitting on them felt more like the perma-recycled couch in your old college dorm room. There is a patio, which would be a godsend in the summertime, but during the winter this bar has the same dimensions as a rabbit hutch. On a happier note, the drinks were strong enough to warm you up without feeling like swallowing molten lava. Not so happy note: I was charged for 3 drinks that I didn't order. If I ever go back, I'll make sure to pay for my drinks in cash instead of opening a tab. Overall I thought that the Viceroy was overrated and trying waaaay too hard. Hopefully better luck next year!
