Restaurant Details

  • Sadly, Vi Bacchus's whole approach to sushi is about overwhelming distraction rather than simple, straightforward tastiness. The menu comprises mainly overpriced rolls with names like Crazy Horse ($10), Super Dragon ($14), and King "Capital" Hill ($12). These rolls, all too many of which contain tempura, sauces, and layers and layers of fish, disguise and overseason the seafood they should be highlighting. The most painful part of eating at Vi Bacchus (overlooking the lukewarm, salt-saturated miso soup served in a mug ) was that the quality of the nigiri plate (tuna, yellowtail, eel, shrimp, salmon; $16) was actually decent. Without all the cheesy trappings, Vi Bacchus might be pretty good.

Not family friendly

We went in with our baby, who is really well-behaved in restaurants. We sat down, ordered and because there were 2 other small parties in the restaurant, the waitress told us the wait for the 3 rolls we ordered would be at least 45 minutes and suggested we eat elsewhere! The she started telling us there are all these other great restaurants on Broadway. This is the first time I've been to a restaurant where they did not want our business and I suspect it is because of the baby. I had high hopes since this is right in our neighborhood, but I would give this one a thumbs down.

great place

I went in one evening as I was staying in Seattle overnite alone and ordered to go, the food was so beautiful I wanted to photograph it. Tasted as wonderful as it looked, the owners are so kind and friendly. I went back a second time in March of 2008, just as spectacular.

Excellent

If you can go in when you'd be the only person/couple in there -- the service is fantastic. If there are several other customers, expect some really unacceptable wait times. Most times I go there is one sushi chef and one waitress, I think they're married and the proprietors of the establishment. Super friendly people, can't say that enough. The sushi is great, but some of their rolls are just way over the top rich. Highly recommended if you have the time to kill.

More & different than just sushi

This is NOT just a sushi joint, it's a full-on, traditional "izakaya" -- a Japanese bar with awesome food. They have the best homestyle Japanese food in town. Try the Gyoza (dumplings), Karaage (flash-fried chicken), and Yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), and Takoyaki (fried squid dumplings). Everything is homemade and tastes like top-end street-fare from Tokyo, ironic though that may be. If you're looking for sushi, the Stranger review is just wrong. It's top-notch, and actually very traditional, with slightly drier and crisper rice in the Tokyo style. And the highlight is a great sake, beer, and wine menu at *great* prices -- a nice watering hole on the Hill. Don't be thrown by the eclectic decor, they've put the money into good service and great good.

consistently B food

great service (maybe because my wife and i are always the only ones in there), weird decor, but great food. yes, it was overpriced, but i love their variety and the sake selection is great, too. i always ask them what i should order- a standard question at sushi bars- but they always say everything is good; kinda disappointing. but i go back cuz i feel badly that their such nice people and their food is really delicious. support your local upstarts.
