change of ownership and staff; now sucks even harder!
Still falling apart, menu sucks harder but drinks have improved slightly, as long as you can get past the fact that the bar is staffed with douchey asses. WSLCB would have fun here.

Weak pours, a menu that's a shadow of what it used to be (selection, prices, quality), and an inattentive staff all conspire to put this once-great place on the "not anymore" list.

I agree that they used to have one of the best bartenders in
town-observe the past tense. Recently,I made the mistake of requesting a wine list and was barked at instead: We don't HAVE a wine list-tell me what you like! They also used to have a great happy hour menu
but cost-cutting has done away with the crab cakes and other special goodies that made the trip up the Ave worthwhile. I'm willing to roll with the downside of getting what I pay for but the hockey puck on a dessicated ciabatta was the first time I've ever returned a happy hour menu item. If you want them to turn down the house lights, all you have to do is pull out something to read at the bar and the bartender will happily and repeatedly hit the dimmer switch. The upside-some truly cool
bar patrons, good people watching when the audience-starved UW theater students descend, and true pours. Now if only the hospitality behind the bar could be nudged up a bit...

Whoever stated above that their happy-hour specials are unremarkable has obviously not actually eaten dinner at Kai's. You can get a full gourmet hamburger with steak fries for $4, (not $5 unless they changed their prices?) and $3 microbrews/wells. I used to eat dinner there so often, the waitresses had my order memorized. I don't see how you can get more affordable than a $4 burger with all the fixings.
I would have added that they have the best bartender in town, but sadly he doesn't work there any more, making my visits to Kai's less frequent, but I still plan on hitting up happy hour on a regular basis.
