Green star Tsukushinbo (International District)

515 S Main St
Seattle, WA 98104
(206) 467-4004

A diminutive, unpretentious Japanese joint serving old standbys and unusual delicacies with very little fuss, Tsukushinbo is one of the best sushi deals in town and still, maybe, somewhat of a secret (though Ichiro knows the score). Note that from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays, a stellar shoyu ramen is served. They usually run out by one o'clock. The rarity of this ramen—the brief opening of this ramen-window—makes it all the more precious.

Like it, but....

I really like the spare but cozy atmosphere. I have been there twice in the past week, but they really need to hire someone to help that poor waitress. She's covering the entire restaurant without any help, and it slows things down. It's disconcerting to those of us who have empathy, seeing her run around feverishly taking orders, clearing tables, taking instructions from parties who want to split up their bill on four different credit cards. It's inhumane, and it's not good if you're in there for a limited lunch break.

Most authentic Sushi in Seattle

This is probably the closet that one can get in Seattle to eating sushi with a similar taste and ambiance as to what you would find in Japan. Mike-son is the owner and main sushi chef. Very skilled and quite friendly. Tsukushinbo offers a very authentic experience, which is why the place is quite often packed with Japanese diners. I have been going there for at least 5 years and have probably eaten approximately 60 meals in total! I do however recommend that you sit a the sushi bar if possible. One waitress is so incredibly dumb and slow that the ordering/serving/payment process can be maddening (she is nice though...).

Why are all these Japanese people here?

Walking into this restaurant is like a step into another world. Almost everyone seated at the modest sushi bar or tables is Japanese. The saba dinner is to die for, as is the sushi. The spicy tuna roll is the best I've had anywhere. Sushi orders are slow in coming, but it's worth it. Besides, we love watching the sushi chef chat it up with the Japanese men at the bar who are obviously relaxed. There are also many "small plates" that have A TON of food. Great place. Makes me hungry!
