El Farol (Capitol Hill)

1467 E Republican St
Seattle, WA 98112
(206) 325-9005

Formerly known as Jalisco but still under the same ownership, El Farol offers Mexican-American standards (think combo plates, various pollo dishes, etc.) in a comfortably familiar setting (booths, hanging plastic plants, etc.). The food does not exceed expectations, but the service is quick and pleasant.

Talk about gas and stomach ache.

I think the title says it all. Those Cysco beans and canned tortilla soup are the best for purging your system.

Not So Good

The other night, I ordered a 3 soft taco combo meal with beans and rice. It was $8.50 and when I got my receipt to sign..it said $10.00. I know that tax is NOT $1.50 and I was told the extra fees were for 'take out packaging'. However, when I opened up the take out bag to eat my dinner, I had no utensils or napkins. The 3 soft tacos were actually 3 crunchy shelled tacos with bright orange shredded cheese that could pass for Taco Bell cheese. Go to Taco Bell for a better deal (they do not charge you for take out) or go down Rainier Ave. for actual authentic Mexican.

pico de gallo, too!

I crave their pico de gallo when reading. I crave their pico de gallo while playing in my illegal lawn dart league. I crave their pico de gallo while checking my superfresh hair in the mirror in the morning. I crave their pico de gallo while eating basil pesto huevos con jamon with a mouse in a m'r- f'n house. I crave their pico de gallo whilst making sweet love. I crave their pico de gallo when slightly off balance from spinning in my office chair for too long. And I love their tacos al carbon, too. Good place, love the atmosphere of all locations, including the tacqueria.

Good Mole

Mexican restaurants in Seattle tend to disappoint (Azteca, I'm looking at you), especially if (like me) you're from the Southwest and know what real Mexican food tastes like. Jalisco's does a pretty fair job of it though, offering a diverse menu of well-prepared food, though if you want it hot and spicy, you really have to let the waiter know you mean business. The best Jalisco's has to offer is easily overlooked: try the chicken mole enchilada, off the "build-your-own enchillada" menu. It's excellent. Vegetarians will also appreciate the amazing spinach enchilada, which comes covered in fresh sliced avacado. There are alos locations in Queen Anne and Lake City.

Unpretentious Comfort food

Other than the fact that you can always count on the food to be good, you can always count on Jalisco to be consistent. I've been going there for the last ten years, as the place is in my hood, and there are always the same faces working there. They are always happy to change things around and make special orders for my kids and they welcome families (unlike a lot of other places in the areas where you get attitude if you walk in with a small child.) The waitstaff is friendly and the place has a very "Where everybody knows your name" vibe to it. Good family dining. Great value. Really cool people.

pico de gallo

The pico de gallo is to die for... really the only reason I drag my friends there! The service is fast but not always with the right food. I once had a fish taco there that if my friend wouldn't have told me to spit out... well it could've ruined our whole night!!! I say go there for the gallo, beer and skip all things fish!

Alright Mexican food

Take your average Mexican restaurant experience and that's basically what you get at Jalisco. It's not disappointing, the service is sharp and accomodating, the prices are alright and the food you get is decent, no more, no less. Not a bad place to go if you're looking for a reliably decent Mexican lunch/dinner.

It's Jalisco, what do you expect. If you live nearby, it's easy to find quick, cheap, cheese-covered Mexican food and margaritas with friendly service. If you don't live nearby, chances are you have some other Jalisco or Azteca like place to go to instead, and your experience there won't be much different. The space for this Jalisco is weird in that it's kind of out of the way, a little tiny, and every now and then smells a bit funky, but other than that, not too shabby.
