Restaurant Details

  • Ho Soon Yi reportedly serves some of the best Korean food in Seattle, with some eaters going so far as to rank it among the restaurants in New York's Koreantown. This Edmonds strip-mall restaurant is known for its soon-doo-boo, or soft tofu stew. The soon-doo-boo is served in superheated earthenware pots with a brick-red broth that seethes angrily around white curds of tofu. While it's still hissing, a server adds raw egg to the mix. The soup turns out to be pleasantly hot—no temple dabbing or hyperventilation, just a happy burn that dissipates fairly quickly. The pork and kimchee that flavor the soup are still detectable, and the texture is luscious. Other standouts include the dak bulgogi and the Korean pancakes with squid and green onions. Service is notoriously spotty.
  • Features: Good for Groups and To Go
  • Cuisine: Korean

Good food, bad service

To the person above who posted about racism, it's not just non-koreans who get bad service, it's everyone. I'm korean, and I think their service stinks. I keep coming back, though, b/c the food is good, especially the pajun.

Hosoonyi

They really don't want non-Koreans as guests. It is apparent by the way customers are treated - This is a restaurant for Koreans or Korean accompanied guests. Food is good if you can take the racism.

This place kicks ass

This is by far my favorite Korean restaurant in the Seattle area. First off, I'm usually one of the only non-Korean people in the place, which is usually a good sign. You can also challenge yourself and sit in the traditional Korean area (no chairs), but don't say that you weren't warned. The soon-do-boo is served with a flair, as are the kalbi and other grilled meats. They also serve a seafood omelette-like dish that is greasy and totally awesome. The service can definitely be problematic from time to time (it's hard to tip someone when they're rude to you), but sometimes that's the price you pay for authentic food.

meh

The service suuuucked! They kicked us out early so they could watch a game on TV. Granted, this was a while ago (sometime last year?) and there was some important baseball thing going on. But please. We were avoiding the baseball madness. We wanted to go to a restaurant and relax. We barely finished our (greasy) bibimbab and were hurried out the door, forty five minutes before the posted closing time.
