The Herbfarm (Eastside)

The Herbfarm was dogmatic about hyper-local/seasonal ingredients and artisanal producers long before it became de rigueur. A wine-cellar open house and garden tour—meet the pigs!—precede the single-seating prix-fixe dinner, with nine-course menus based on weekly themes such as "Uber Tuber," "Truffle Treasure," and "A Menu for a Spring Forager's Dinner." All you can drink ("within common sense limits") of five or six wines is included, as well as plenty of explanatory discourse (along with sales pitches for additional wine, neighboring Willows Lodge, The Herbfarm Cookbook...). Decor is of the old-fashioned, fussy variety, and the meal costs $200-plus per person and lasts four or five hours. While the Herbfarm has been sometimes said to be the apex of Northwest cuisine, those who dislike proselytizing and frilliness are in for a long evening; everyone else probably won't want it to ever end.

Banquet hall, not a restaurant

- The Herbfarm's format is that of a hotel banquet, not a restaurant. Waiters bring out hundreds of identical plates from the kitchen at the same time. Unfortunately, it is simply not possible to produce this many plates exactly at the same time and preserve quality. For example, entrees at the Herbfarm are never served at the correct temperature. Be warned: entrees are lukewarm at best. - Part of the price of admission is listening to a 30 minute introduction of the kitchen staff. (I'm not kidding; I was looking at my watch.) - The ratio of wine to food is out of balance. The whole experience sometimes felt more like a wine party than a dinner. - Three of the nine courses are desserts. (!) There is no soup or salad course (at least in the three times I have visited). - The Herbfarm serves after-dinner tea. This is a howler-- the only rule of tea is that you don't drink it after dinner. Overall, I would say that you have to be in just the right mood to put up with the Herbfarm. The cuisine itself can be flavorful and inventive, but the banquet-oriented concept of this restaurant limits what they can do.

Amazing dining experience

The food and wine is fantastic, and should be for how much it costs. But what makes this place interesting and unique is the whole experience of using locally grown products, local wines, pairing the wines with the meals, and the presentation of it over several hours, which they do beautifully. We also sat at the "European Table" and met a bunch of interesting folks, I'd reccomend that for a change of pace. The only things I would critique: they took my wine away too quickly (I don't drink much or fast) and they do a whole introductory song/dance that was too long for me. Get there early and start in on the champagne, it makes that opening piece a little more enjoyable.

Best.Food.Ever.

The meal I had here was the best meal I've ever had in my life. There are no words for how good it was. It was a wedding gift, so I was not paying. I've considered going back, but it is a little too spendy for me. Maybe my 10th anniversary? Mom? Dad? ;-)

definitly only if you're parents are paying.

each week the herbfarm restaurant chooses the best from farm, forest, and sea to create a different nine course meal. it was delicious and the service is amazing.
