Food is pretty terrible, but the servers are friendly if overworked

Sometimes Rockbottom has too long a wait (and they're only mediocre, anyways) and you're hungry & seeing a show at 5th Ave in an hour. And so I have found myself dragged to Elephant & Castle three times in two years. My sister was a huge fan of their halibut fish & chips. At $16, I found them only average. My 2nd visit I tried the Nachos and found them extremely disappointing. Toppings were sparse and the cheese wasn't even melted all the way through. Here's your $13 plate of stale tortilla chips with a sprinkling of unmelted cheese and olives. But served atop fake old-timey british newsprint...isn't that charming?

Last night was the last time, however. Foolishly, I tried the Shepherd's Pie. They play up their English Pub theme so strongly, I felt for SURE that this would be decent. It was pretty terrible! The mashed potatoes must have come out of a box (or pre-cooked fridge packet). And this glue-y stuff is just spread over the most anemic, bland glop. (Although the meat portion of the pie was more edible than the potatoes, which I abandoned entirely). (Again, served in an adorable skillet, giving the initial impression that these are assembled and cooked to order *Ha*). The side of green beans was so overcooked, shriveled and sad. We felt sure they'd been sitting in water for a few days, at least. The side salad was at least fresh greens with a decent balsamic dressing, so that was something. My pal ordered a burger, which she said was pretty mediocre, but she did manage to eat most of it, so that's more than could be said for my "shepherd's pie."

While the food is terrible, the staff is friendly, at least. But on two of my three visits, they have been critically understaffed. Our server has apologized for the long waits/lack of attention and explained that they're having to cover two sections that evening.

They're crazy

I don't know what place they are reviewing, but go for yourself. My husband and I had a wonderful time(April 2008)....GREAT food...GREAT attention from the servers....reasonable cost. I have taken friends, who loved it, and will continue to go.

wtf mate?

An english phone booth? Well it MUST be authentic! We went for breakfast one morning and were the only ones in there. It took 1.5 hours to get our food, 30 more minutes to get the check after asking, and were overcharged by at least 20%. Boo all over that place. Go up to the Terrace Cafe instead.

corporate brothel

i had to meet someone here when i used to work for a large ugly corporation. i suffered paranoia and chills as i sat there, expecting the place to stop spinning and spit me out in the central business district of some other second-rate city somewhere else. from what i can tell, though, a real attraction of this place would be the large number of mid-range gold-digger and low-end corporate-prostitute types that circulate through the bar area. it's like a carpeted, extra-depressing red-light district for traveling middle-managers and other corporate types. i felt dirty and uncomfortable and left my obligatory meeting early so i could go home, change my clothes, and ponder all that has gone wrong in this world.

ugh

The food was awful, to the point that one could make a joke about them trying to live up to the "British food is bad" stereotype. I'm embarrassed to have even been in there.
