Don't let the cheesy name spook you: That's Amore isn't another bland red-sauce emporium, but an ambitious Italian restaurant flourishing in the otherwise restaurant-deprived wilds of Mount Baker. People love the fuck out of this place, praising its good food, great views, and casual swank.
I live in the neighborhood and heard mostly negative comments but I went there with the hope of proving them wrong.
Here was my experience tho: went with my son one evening....the restaurant was mostly empty. I ordered a glass of red wine and the waiter came with a bottle and poured me a small bit. There was an awkward moment because it seemed like such a small a pour that I thought he was just pouring me a taste (I’m guessing that there was about 2 oz of wine in the glass)...I tasted it and said it was fine which he acknowledge but then slipped away without pouring more. I looked at the next table who appeared to be drinking wine by the glass and there was significantly more wine in their glasses at that moment. Granted, the waiter was giving them a lot of attention so I’d expect a heavier pour for regulars. But when the waiter came by again, I asked him if mine was a full pour and he said Oh yes, and elaborated on how strict the owners were about the amount of wine. It’s been a few years, but I worked in restaurants for almost a decade and I think we were shooting for about 6-7 glasses per bottle….this pour (and I’m not exaggerating) would result in about 20 glasses per bottle…so I asked if I could just buy the whole bottle since the glass was about $7.00 and the bottle was about $24 (can’t recall the exact prices but it was something on this order). The waiter’s response was that he’d still have to charge me for the glass of wine in addition to the bottle of wine, otherwise the owners would dock him for this on his paycheck. At that point I just accepted by $7 2-oz of wine and tried to shrug it off. Then the food came….it wasn’t bad but it was just very un-inspired and sloppily plated….in fact, I found the menu to be something of a time warp back to menus of Italian restaurants in the 70s or 80s. Again, not bad but just kind of uninspired.
The above review says that the neighborhood loves the fuck out of this restaurant….that does not jive with my observations. They are rarely busy….if there was that much support, it would be packed all the time. I might go check it out again sometime, but the empty tables tell me that it is still a below average place….with a very spectacular view however.
I've eaten often at this great little Italian cafe, service has always been super friendly and the food, of course, is just amazing. Delicious every time, from the pasta to the brunch! Beautiful view of Seattle from the big window . . .
