Restaurant Details

  • This small Broadway shop offers Middle Eastern standards—falafel, beef and lamb gyros, baba ghanoush—served up fast-food style, and at first, the self-service and glossy plastic decor seem out of place. Shouldn't food this good be served on plates, by waiters, and shouldn't it cost more? But therein lies Ali Baba's charm.
  • Features: Cheap Eats
  • Cuisine: Mediterranean/Greek

surprisingly good

As a general rule, I don't eat in places that have the 'wax food' displays. Seriously, what the fuck? Is that supposed to look appetizing? That said, they make a mean falafel sandwich and decent zaatar.

Great Gyros - If Only Not Warm Enough

Great gyros. They aren't expensive either. The people are friendly and the music isn't too loud or annoying like so many restaurants. It's a little dingy inside, but I really don't mind. Their food is always really tasty, but is also always a little cold. I want to toss it in the microwave first! The meat is lukewarm and everything else is cold. I feel like the meat should be hot, the pita and sauce warm, and the veggies cold.

Creepy from the outside, tasty on the inside

I didn't try this place for over a year, because the fake plastic food in the window looked gross. Hummus and falafel don't do well in plastic. But I finally broke down and was pleasantly surprised. The food is good (not great) and cheap and the staff is really fast and nice. It's usually pretty quiet, so I think it's a nice place to read, too.

Capitol Hill Must Try

This is a perfect place to go for a quick and cheap bite. I'm a vegetarian, so I usually get a falafel sandwich. If you're not terribly hungry, get the hummus plate and a side of frieds-they go so well together (and the pita and hummus are the best I've ever had. The pita is soft warm and actually grilled and the hummus is creamy and flavorful- Warning: they sometimes put a lot of jalapeno juice on the hummus. It tastes great but can be a surprise). Also, try the hot tea. My boyfriend get is all the time and now the owner brings me one for free-even when I'm alone. I've never been disappointed.

authentic!

This place is one of the only Middle Eastern joints I've found that serve za'atar, a tasty spice of the region (the owner is Jordanian). Anything with za'atar or labaneh (yogurty cheese, also typical) is a good choice. The people are friendly and gave us tea the last two times we went in. Casual and cheap and really good - go there soon.
