Bar Details

  • On a deserted stretch of Fourth Avenue South, the neon signage for Andy's Diner rises above the surrounding buildings, a derelict beacon never more than partially lit. Andy's is made up of seven old-fashioned train cars, several disused and dark yet with tables still laid, all linked together in a warren-like way with narrow corridors and strange dim corners, and a "CLUB CAR FOR COCKTAILS" at its heart.
  • Hours: Mon-Fri 6:30am- 9:30pm, Sat 11:30am- 9:30pm
  • Features: Snacks Available

Wow!

I'd heard that Andy's is "under new management" so the other half and I headed down there for another try at the old gal. Service (which was always fine, if a bit motherly) is the same as always, but the food is ZOWIE! They have some sort of bargain steak that is drenched in what they say is their own BBQ sauce. Whether it really is home-made or simply intelligently added to remains to be seen, but it was one of the best bargain steaks I've ever had. The rest of the menu is simple and beefy, but good. Things really are looking up at Andy's. I'll echo what others have said here: That this place is so unique, so fun, and so funky that it really is deserving of a "rediscovery" (but not in the Vito's sense of the word. They can still cook here) so head on down south, y'all!

Not the bar of choice

Okay, so it's made of train cars. So it has stray cats. So it's got the FDR Presidential coach. It's got history, it's got deep-fried food, and it's got that dive-y bar flavor to it. It also closes at nine-thirty during the week, relies heavily on the clubs, groups, and organizations that meet one to a car, and has a terribly difficult time managing to feed anything that isn't dripping in grease. Admittedly, the Cobb salad isn't bad, but the drinks are as mediocre. Frankly, Andy's Diner, while an institution, is also not exactly the destination spot. So, hipsters, please, feel more than free to take over Andy's. Because once it's gone, in twenty years some retrospective hipster yearning for the link to their ubercool past will want, at some point, to find a way to resurrect a diner made out of traincars.

Why are you not hanging out here?!

Andy's Diner is one of the last remaining holdouts as far as cool old divey bars in this city. It is made of freakin' traincars people! Once this place is gone, you will never see anything like it again. This place is ripe for a hipster takeover - which I am actually conflicted about, but if it keeps Andy's in business, I can suffer some backwards emo hair and ladies jeans on men. Why, WHY are you not drinking here? And you know what, the steak is pretty good and they serve veggie burgers, so get on it! And the stray cats that live under the restaurant? That's just a little bonus for getting lost on your way to the bathrooms.
