La Cocina y Cantina (Capitol Hill)

432 Broadway E
Seattle, Washington 98102
(206) 323-1675

La Cocina y Cantina offers Mexican-American standards (think combo plates, lots of melted cheese, big margaritas) in a standard American Mexican restaurant setting on Broadway. It and its buffet have persisted, somewhat inexplicably, for approximately 107 years.

I live around the corner from this place and I never have a visitor come to town who doesn't get at least one margarita from this place. The food is outstanding (and I'm talking about the buffet, man--when was the last time somebody told you buffet food is good? It's terrific), the margaritas are wonderful, and I can't say enough about the terrific staff. Just wonderful!

Be still my heart.

There was a time that I was going here three nights a week with coworkers. Why? Happy Hour! This place makes a fabulous big girly drink! Their margaritas and daquiris are best unblended, and strong to boot. Try the premium margarita, it's a perfect mix of their better tequilas! The food! Half a chicken with rice? Chicken con Mole? All of it is delicious. Their beans aren't cooked in lard, their salsa is actually really good, La Cocina is just a great place to go and get some drinks and share lots of food. Waitstaff is ++ Prompt, friendly, knowledgable.

The best in town

We have been going here for years because the food is so, so good! The chips and salsa - and be sure to ask for pico de gallo to go with the chips - are great. The atmosphere is really fun – a wonderful place for lunch or dinner. Service is consistently good. Try the Sangria.

Good Atmosphere

I'm not sure what it is about this place. The food is good, but doesn't exactly stand out. It just has a really fun aura about it. The big mural on the wall, the large open windows in the summer for watching the always entertaining Broadway crowd, the friendly little child's drawings by the door. Just an all around enjoyable place to eat. Also, can't miss the $5 margaritas!

Mostly Good

I moved here from San Antonio (by way of many other places) -- and while this is probably my favorite Mexican place in Seattle proper, it certainly wouldn't hold a candle to anything down near the border. Actually, when compared to some of the best hole-in-the-wall Mexican I've had, this place is super disappointing. Compare it to the disgrace of a Mexican place across the street and you won't be disappointed. Awesome margaritas and great service. Never had to wait for a seat.

it's not Cali-Mex!

This place actually says "La Cocina & Cantina" as the restaurant name outside. I went here with someone from Texas who grew up in a Mexican family and was tired of the "Cali-Mex" we have here - aka Azteca style food. The food is really good and very filling, I couldn't even finish my plate, and it's NOT because it was bad.

Muy Caliente!

Yes, the buffet scares me. I admit it. But the chips and salsa are faboo. And the entrees are pretty darn ok (leave the snobbery at home). The reason to go: the service. The staff will fawn over you like the mamacitas you never had.

Nice buffet

The entrees are decent, but I come here for the lunch buffet. All you can eat, and a decent all-around selection of Mexican staples. Who would've thought you could have salmon with a side of rice and beans? LOL, but you can. Also, salmon, ground beef and salad stuff. Worth the relatively cheap price.

Good times

I love their arroz con pollo, and frequently go to Broadway just to eat here. The service is usually good, though in the dinner rush it can be a while. I highly recommend the cocina.

YUM!

yes, please! the food here is awesome AND they have veggie meat to substitute the beef (not on the menu, just ask!). it's wonderful to say the least. their combos are very filling for 2 people which doesn't drain the bank. go, go, go!
