We had been looking forward to dining at our newest neighborhood restaurant for some time now and last night was the night. We were celebrating our anniversary so needless to say, we were hoping for a great experience. Upon arrival, the host told us it would be about a 30 minute wait for a table and suggested we go next door to Opal for a drink while we waited. We said......no problem......great idea! We got our call however after about 10 minutes and ended up having to quickly slurp down our cocktails, pay our tab, and then hightail it back over. We were met by the same host who seemed annoyed that it took us 5 minutes to get back. But anyhow, we were starving and excited to feast on some delicious food.
Well the FOOD did not disappoint. It was delicious using simple, fresh, and flavorful ingredients. So why the 1 star rating? Well, I'll tell ya..........We each ordered a glass of wine. Surprisingly, after taking no more than a few of sips from them, our waiter approached our table and asked if we wanted another round. I promptly said, "No, I'm fine thank you."..........I still had at least 2/3 of a glass and was quite content (after having just chugged down my potent cocktail at Opal). My boyfriend who had about half a glass left said, "Yes, I would like another." Waiter promptly returned with 2 bottles of wine and proceeded to "top off" EACH of our glasses. Mmmmmm........we're thinking.......wonder how they charge for that. Well anyhow, enjoyment of food and conversation continued.
Well big surprise when we got our tab. They charged us for 4 GLASSES of wine........both at $9.00/glass = $18.00 x 2 totaling $36.00. Wow! How incredibly shifty!!! Especially since I said I didn't even want another. Why didn't I speak up at the time I ask myself?......Well it happened so fast as we were engrossed in conversation.
Now, I've ordered wine (both by the glass and bottle) on numerous occasions at some of Seattle's best restaurants and I'm pretty sure I've never been charged $18.00 for two little "top offs" until now. It irritated me so much it prompted me to write my first reviews! So if you want some delicious food only to have it ruined by shady service then go for it! Quite a disappointment and shame on them!!!
Most of the food was good but the waiter was one of the worst I've had in recent years. Not very friendly and hard to get him to crack a smile. Weird, quiet, not helpful and slightly arrogant. The food was OK but I probably won't go back. The chantrelles were not fresh. The arugula salad was my favorite of all the 6-8 things we tried. I was suprised after hearing all about this restaurant for a long while as to how mediocre it turned out to be.

Date Night- 1 unhappy couple vs. 1 very happy couple
While we were reading the menu, the couple next to us was having their own dilemma. They must have had a hard time compromising as the female said to the male "You never take me to hot springs. I want to go to hot springs! We never go to Mexico, either!".
Woman. Shut. It. Don't have a melt-down.
I leaned into my husband and turned my back to them. Focused on the menu.
First up was the Reggiano Broth with fregola and anchovy oil. Cheese lovers should not miss this dish.
The Seared Sea Scallops with controne beans, bacon, and shallots were a hit. The cubes of crispy pork and the chick-pea shaped beans were outrageously good.
The agnolotti with cauliflower and aged balsamic vinegar (14 years aged) was spot on. Common sense prevents me from writing what word popped into my mind eating these pasta pillows.
The baked polenta is amazing. Take a spoonful of the fonduta sauce first. Mother's milk. The sauce just pushed it over the top.
It turned out that the bar is the better place to sit. It was a pure pleasure to watch the chef. His cutting board/block was spotless, since he wiped it down between uses. Another sign that he reigns supreme was that the low refrigerators under the counter were organized with clear plastic containers of ingredients.
This is a great date place. You will find yourself spontaneously feeding your dining partner, if you like them that much.
