Journey 2 is an affront to the term “loosely based,” and has very little to do with Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island beyond stealing the coordinates of the island, by placing it in the South Pacific. Ironically, there is absolutely nothing mysterious about the film, and within ten minutes the audience has already arrived at the island. Within thirty minutes, the ruins of Atlantis are discovered, albeit indifferently, by the adventure-hungry team led by Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson. The film is utterly ridiculous, with so many waterfalls, rainbows, and butterflies it feels more like a Lisa Frank coloring book than a harrowing landscape. (AMY SCOTT)
