Dr. Seuss co-scripted and designed this surreal battle royale between a monstrous piano teacher and his enslaved students. A box-office flop, this glorious Technicolor freak-out now falls just an Oompa-Loompa or two short of being king of the subversive children’s films. Some of the more mod ’50s touches have not aged well, but compared to the soulless live-action botches later made of The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat, this is pure, fantaboozular rocket fuel to the Dr.’s unique subconscious.
