Ludivine Sagnier (from 2003’s Swimming Pool) once again finds herself circling that ancient flame of Eros and madness with an older woman, this time in Love Crime, a thriller directed by Alain Corneau, who died shortly after completing the film. Sagnier plays Isabelle and Kristin Scott Thomas plays the older woman, Christine. Both are executives in an American-owned multinational corporation. The crime, which happens near the middle of the film, is a beautiful sequence. Blood flows from a wound and pools by a lifeless body. Music flows into the room as if from an open window. It's a strange composition (by Pharaoh Sanders) that combines the sorrowful sounds of a sax and koto. The sax is American, the koto is Japanese, the crime is French noir. The film is brilliant.
