With regard to the student loans that tripled, that's what happens when you default on them. The $35,000 that I borrowed through the Guaranteed Student Loan Program when I was in grad school jumped to a balance of over $100,000 after I became unemployed and was forced to stop paying back the loans. When I finally got a steady full-time job after a few years, the Department of Education garnished my wages; I figure I'll have to work until I'm 130 years old or so to pay back everything!
