@7 hardly making coffee shop a straw man. I was specifically talking about it on its own merit. The comment about free money was tongue in cheek - the fact that it is not free money is the point. Will there be public accountability and transparency on how the money is divided up between the businesses?

Most new single Indy coffee shops of that size have a very hard time to begin with. How much of their success is the taxpayer responsible for?
Is this a good use of city funds - and how will they make that determination? What part of the award will be objective and what part subjective?

The coffee shop at 23rd and Cherry was a business that was barely viable to begin with..bad location for many reasons ( no parking , little foot traffic except for Garfield students, and very small menu and a pseudo-non profit vibe to menu and pricing. Also Am-pm across the street that better caters to quick grab and go commuter market. The owner of coffee shop seems like a nice person but she's not nailing it with that business - irregardless of the construction. Ezells and Am-pm seems to be doing OK despite the construction.

The property she's leasing is a bit sketchy too. Not a great draw to get people in the door

Should we be subsidizing a less-than-viable business to keep it on life support until it inevitably fails? Oh well, it's just free money anyway - not like the city has other needs for it.

LW - Could you Buy a smaller cheaper house in your name only (and establish prenup) and stay with partner. Give her 6 months or a year to shape up financially. She probably won't but if you can't end it with out one last try, maybe this could be a way to go?

@12 there are 1 or 2 other important differences - most people who are nervous about GMO foods are worried about the the cross-species nature of the genetic altering and the lack of trials or testing for safety for new products, especially unintended side effects of the genes on their new host.

Given the track record of transparency and ethics in our corporatocracy over the last 100 years, it's not crazy to be concerned.

but @8 no one should hate on NDGT for this reason. he's awesome.

@41 i would also engage the seattle u community. it would really play into their social justice themes and they have a lot of resources and at least some space on campus. maybe they could do a deep dive with a smaller number of people and get them some serious help and make progress with them to get them back into permanent housing and jobs

@38 the Post office lot on 23rd and Union could hold a lot of RVs. I'm referring to the part or the lot that faces 24th. It has great access to major bus lines, grocery stores (safeway and groc out) and coffee shops and bars and libraries. if they used the same rules as the tent city at the church and were good neighbors, i'm sure we'd be happy to host them in the hood. i live on 22nd and have had very little issues with the folks on the church lot thru the years.

So you would argue that the more an actor is paid, the better they are at their art/job?
Jan 22 Cassette tape fan commented on X-Files' Gillian Anderson Was Paid Half of What David Duchovny Made (And Then the Studio Tried to Do It Again!).
To be paid millions for the luxury of doing what thousands of nameless actors do for a small percentage of that is hardly what most people call work
