It's Spring! Who's Ready for Street Harassment?.
Sometimes women just want to fucking be. Just exist. Be ignored, the way you would an average looking, slightly overweight man. But every woman is always judged on her size, clothes, beauty, boobs, ass, whatever. And you can always feel it. And it's tolerable, usually. But sometimes you just want to walk around and enjoy life, not feeling like you're getting looked at.
Sorry, Cienna, I wish I could punch him in the scrote just for you.

SL Letter of the Day: Insane Demands.
EricaP, I think you have a lot of good insight, but sometimes you come across a bit "sexier than thou," often apologizing for (or even championing) the cheater and putting on a show about how so completely logical your attitude towards sex is. And how comparatively unreasonable everyone else is for having feelings about it.
Your experience and opinions are valued here on Slog; you don't have to be a know-it-all.

Michael Pollan Is the Steve Jobs of Food.
@40, and yet, there are still millions of people starving to death every year, and as you point out, it's not because we don't make enough food. Something's really wrong.

Michael Pollan Is the Steve Jobs of Food.
@32, that's pretty judgmental of you. My mom raised my sister and I too, and I did eat lots of processed food. And why? She worked full-time and two small children and a totally checked out husband. I don't remember her sitting on her ass very much.
We don't need to call Michael Pollan "Jobsian" or "Upton Sinclair." His aim is true, but it isn't practical for everyone. For an impoverished parent juggling 2 jobs, their reliance on convenience is not because they're lazy--it's essential to their survival. It is a luxury to choose what we eat in a world with so many hungry people. Consider also that many people who eat less expensive processed foods live in places where fresh fruits and vegetables aren't readily available, but convenience stores are at every corner. It is the epitome of upper middle classism to judge people who eat processed food.
My last point: Food is not a single issue; it is tied to wealth inequality, healthcare, gender and racial inequality, capitalism, politics, economics... Each issue leans on the others, which is why it's kind of silly to argue about any one issue. Be grateful you get to choose what to eat and do what you can to speak out against what's wrong.

Oh yeah, this is going to end super well. He's already given her some ammo by admitting he'd fuck her; it's only a matter of time before some "anonymous" email ends up in wifey's inbox.
LW is crazy, probably needs intensive therapy; husband needs to get his shit together in his marriage. End of story.

You Know a May Day Protest Was Successful When….
@18, I think you're missing the point of anarchy. For the record, I also do not believe attacking cops or breaking windows is a good way to change anything.
However, there is no reward in "changing the system" by mostly conforming. The notion that the system can be changed enough from within to make a real difference is a farce. Our government is not part of the solution that many Americans like to see it as. We cannot wait for legislators to place proper restrictions on corporations; it won't happen. A lawyer has nothing on a few multi-billionaires who own our country in terms of employment and resources. Government seeks to placate these people. After all, for most politicians (and upper middle class folks, even), the system is working just fine.
The solution? Stop buying from companies you don't want to have money. Buy as much as you can from real farmers, find goods made in the US, and reduce your overall consumption. The only thing that enables these companies to have so much power is that we give them our money voluntarily, as the government forcibly takes our money to bail them out. It's not easy or even possible in all situations, but having more awareness of the practices we directly support by paying for our things part of the key to real change.
In a capitalist system, you really do vote with your dollar. The government is largely useless.

Freedom Is Frustrating.
Unbrainwashed, I am sorry that happened to your friend, and I'm being serious. What happened to his car and the subsequent events is absolutely wrong and very sad. The people who busted up his car are assholes.
But it's important to know that not all anarchists are assholes. Often, they don't break windows or destroy property, but simply hold ideals that humans can do better on this Earth with less political hierarchy if they work together. They share ideas peaceably and use their words. They read and inform and don't believe in authority just for authority's sake.
Of course, some percentage of any group is going to be assholes. But your loathsome attitude towards Duran and Olejnik is totally misdirected. They are not responsible for what happened to your friend.

@Unbrainwashed, I know, I am probably just so fuckwitted to you.
It's funny that you hate anarchists so deeply. I bet if this article was about two people who had witnessed a rape and murder and were jailed for refusing to talk, and we were all saying they deserved it, you'd be absent from the discussion.
Sorry, Cienna, I wish I could punch him in the scrote just for you.
