commented on School Makes Weeping Hungry Kids Throw Away Food Because It Wasn't Paid For
Am I heartless for thinking the school has a pretty good policy going here? Kid forgets lunch money, kid gets cheese sandwich instead of normal hot lunch. This doesn't seem to be aimed at kids who are on subsidized lunches, but at kids who aren't keeping track of their accounts well. It's a debit card on training wheels, and probably not a bad introduction to financial reponsiblity. (I was one of those kids who constantly lost lunch tickets many decades ago. I probably dropped them on my walk to school, which was uphill both ways.)
It's not clear why cheese sandwiches weren't provided after hot lunches were thrown away. That's the real issue, and it's hardly one that should be nation-wide news.

commented on Mitt Romney in a Nutshell
Actually, if he bothered to do a survey of his base, he would find that the vast majority of Chicago children are pro-strike and the extension of summer vacation. Why does Mitt Romney work against the children's interests so?

@35- at home we used the Readers Digest Condensed Books (thank you, Grandma) as building materials for more books shelves. Think cinder blocks and boards without the cinder blocks.
