Jan 13, 2016 Doodah commented on The Big Lid.
First thing I asked upon moving here from Dallas was, Why no lid? I'm stunned a place like Dallas could pull this off (the new park is awesome, the old freeway valley it covered was awful) while Seattle is still living with this ugly trench.
Several people told me a lid and park were on the drawing boards here in the 90's, but after 9-11 the Feds killed the idea because of security concerns about access to a federal building adjacent to I-5. That makes no sense to me. Isn't it easier to get close to the building if the road runs right by it? But after hearing that story a few times I assume that's what happened. Maybe now it's been long enough that calmer heads could take another look.

I also live around the corner. I really wanted to like this place since there aren't many choices in the neighborhood. I've tried four of the sandwiches, all of which were meh at best. I keep hoping I'll find one I love, but so far nothing really stands out.

The beer selection is great, worth checking out. The place has a fast-food vibe with all the gleaming white and stainless steel surfaces though, so it's not all that comfy to just hang out over a couple of beers.

Betty (in Queen Anne) makes a very nice cassoulet this time of year.

@6 and Dan, in the past few weeks several commentators (Matt Yglesias, among others) have pointed out the the Rs can do something that is completely legal and terrifying, and there's nothing progressives can do about it. Several of those blue states now have Republican legislatures and/or governors. If they wanted to, nothing is preventing them from passing a law changing the winner-take-all allocation of electoral votes. They could change it to award EVs proportionally, for example. So instead of getting all of Pennsylvania's 20 EVs, the D might get 12 and the R 8. Add Wisconsin, maybe Michigan, other blue states with red state governments, and you've lost much of the advantage discussed in the article.

Kept hoping this would get better, funnier, more interesting. Never getting that 18 minutes back, dammit.
Feb 7, 2014 Doodah commented on New York Times: Seattle Is the Oakland of the North.
Ha ha, that article is perfect. It should be preserved in amber as the epitome of how New Yorkers see every other city. Starts with the assumption that the other city (ANY other city..) must have an inferiority complex. Because how could it not? It's not NYC!
And then goes on to make a bunch of half-assed generalizations based on nothing.
I lived there a long time ago and quickly realized that my preconceived idea that New Yorkers are sophisticated, cosmopolitan people couldn't be more wrong. It's the most provincial place in the world. The difference with other places is, people elsewhere tend to have some awareness that they're provincial...

RING is naive. "But we're great rimmers" will get you nowhere on this list:

One major legal rationale for equal marriage is that so many rights and privileges are associated with that piece of paper. If you want to be with her from now on, you're naive at best, stupid at worst, not to marry her.
Feb 3, 2014 Doodah commented on The Good Chris Weber and the Good/Bad Art Collective.
Denton is a little Texas town, true, but as Jen knows since she lived there, there's a reason (worth mentioning) why an art collective would blossom in Denton and not, say, Wichita Falls. The University of North Texas in Denton is well-known in those parts as a mecca for musical talent. It's kind of a poor man's Julliard. So it's less surprising than it might seem to have a nice mix of artsy/creative types in Denton to support something like this than in just any random Lufkin.

I'm wondering how coherent this will be going back into Italian. We've learned in working with my company's international offices to avoid slang and clever neologisms, like "inhibition-inhibiting" and "your girlfriend aces..." and "plastered". Auto-translators don't handle that kind of linguistic creativity well at all.
