Something like more than a third of the nation's adults are illiterate or functionally illiterate, meaning they can't read and comprehend much more than a simple brochure. This survey is optimistic.

On the NSA - what, did they put the search utility in maintenance mode for the 15 minutes it took to draft that BS memo? Sorry, can't at this time!

So if we take the 20% of their profits that come from sales ($1.1B), spread it over all US workers, that gives $1571.43 extra to each worker per year.

If we assume each worker puts in 30 hours a week through the year, that's an extra $1.01 per hour.

More if the other $4.4 billion in profits is up for grabs.

Whiteness, especially when considering people who may not be "purely" white, also encompasses their relationship to authority. Has this person of questionable whiteness submitted to the strictures of whiteness? That's part of why you see the handful of prominent black Republicans championed as they are. It's what makes a biracial but visually Hispanic Zimmerman "one of us".

Racism isn't just racial, there's an inherent power dynamic to it. In certain cases, those who would otherwise be outside the racial identity can find inclusion through submission to group identity and authority.

I remember being at a conference run by folks really big on PGP. It was an absolute comedic farce watching them trying to keep the crap straight themselves.

There are better ways to battle gendered attitudes.

Fuck them. Seattle isn't pro-sports' rebound date. We want the Sonics. Now every shitty businessman with a team wants to set us up on blind dates with their stinking mess of an arena deal? No thanks.

If the content were always on cute and boring subjects, it would be easy to avoid that language. But when we have to talk about pieces of shit like Rodney Tom dicking over the entire state for his self-gratification; or assholes finding new and creative ways to suppress the rights of others they don't like; or ... yeah, harsh language doesn't begin to appropriately convey the emotion. To pretend these things deserve dispassionate decorum is asking for something that's simply not genuine.

Yeah.. didn't the other co-founder kill his family in a murder-suicide not too long ago??

We can't make that decision if it's all secret.

I know others have said it, but this deserves repeating. There is no need to keep secret the fact that this stuff happens. Secrecy only guarantees that we never get to make that decision and that there will never be accountability for the programs. It does not "damage national security" to talk about this. Let them keep some details obscured to prevent countermeasures being developed - that's reasonable. But the program's existence, its goals and its broad means does not need to be secret.
