Bodega Bonanza.
I thought The Stranger is supposed to be our "alternative newspaper"! If so, what is it doing being a shill for business interests on the city council? And what happened to basic principles of journalism: since when do you write an article about major changes being proposed to a neighborhood and then NOT interview a single person who lives in the neighborhood? How convenient for Richard Conlin that Cienna Madrid's article turned into a perfect vehicle for his ideas about a neighborhood he does not live in. Well, I have a suggestion: let's start this new zoning policy on the block that Richard Conlin lives on in Madronna; and on Mayor McGinn's block in Greenlake as well. Let's see who is a NIMBE then! I live in Capitol Hill and walk to absolutely everything I need. There is plenty of available space for new "bodegas" on arterial streets like 15th and 19th that are already zoned for business use. Some of those spaces have been vacant for years. Capitol Hill is already a great example of how to integrate businesses and residences in a way that works for everyone: don't wreck that. The city council should be figuring out how to make Seattle neighborhoods in which everyone drives to everything more walking friendly -- there are a lot of those neighborhoods in Seattle, but Capitol Hill is not one of them. Single family residences and people with demanding jobs who choose to live in Capitol Hill need and deserve the peace and quiet that allows them to live their lives. If you lose that, you will lose a lot of people who live in Capitol Hill because it is a mixed neighborhood that allows all these things to coexist peacefully. The law in question would bring in giant signs with lights, outdoor seating at night, and delivery trucks in the wee hours of the morning. I suggest The Stranger and the City Council to start by asking people who live in Capitol Hill what they think. Maybe it is time to get someone from Capitol Hill onto the City Council. In fact, maybe it is time to get changes all around on the City Council. Don't drive families and working folks out of Capitol Hill!
