@19 @21 It's a net increase of $40. The $20 fee Metro currently collects is expiring in June. Plus if you have sufficiently low income to qualify, you can get a $20 rebate from the county.

Still regressive, but they've done what they can.
Feb 21, 2014 mloar commented on Hey Slog, How Much Do You Think Microsoft Spends on Its Payroll Each Year?.
So the best source for payroll in Washington is the Employment Security Department. Employers have to file quarterly reports divulging their payroll for the purpose of calculating their unemployment insurance taxes.

We're helped here by the fact that Microsoft has chosen to classify itself under NAICS code 511210 (Software publishers). This distinguishes it from Amazon and Google, which use other codes.

In Q2 2013, the most recent quarter for which they released data, all 511210 employers had a total of $1,810,714,302
for quarterly wages. So that would work out to about $7.2B per year.

What @4 said.

What we should do is propose a statewide measure to replace the asinine B&O tax and most of the sales tax with a flat income tax.

This is depressing. Might a Transfer of Development Rights scheme help prevent this sort of thing?

It's actually a 2/3 threshold, not 60 percent.

Where's the legally binding Slog poll?
Jan 11, 2013 mloar commented on This Is Why We Need Protected Bicycle Lanes in Downtown Seattle.
@18: The Dearborn Street cycle track in Chicago shows one way to solve the problem: left-turn pockets and bicycle signals.

Alternately there's the Dutch solution of having the cycle track jog on to the side street so that turning motorists cross it at a right angle.
Jan 11, 2013 mloar commented on This Is Why We Need Protected Bicycle Lanes in Downtown Seattle.
For all the bluster from the idiots at the Seattle Times about "Mayor McSchwinn," we actually haven't gotten much bicycle infrastructure built.

Contrast that with Chicago where Rahm Emmanuel becomes mayor and within 18 months there's a world-class cycle track on Dearborn Street in the Loop.

Seattle Process drives me nuts.
Sep 26, 2012 mloar commented on New Group Wants District Elections for City Council.
@10: There are a number of US cities that use a split system like Houston, Philadelphia and Indianapolis.

The at-large members are a kind of hedge against the council becoming too parochial.

I support district-elected members. It's asinine that you can get a seat on the King County Council or in the state legislature with fewer votes than you need to win an election for City Council.
