I think you were too harsh on Mom in the third paragraph, Dan. She can be surprised, disoriented, without being homophobic. Indeed you likely hit the hammer on the head in the very next paragraph: kid probably isn't, in her mind, even sexual yet, and so how could he have come to conclusions that determine his future so profoundly as this. Just give her a little time, BITCH, and please be ready to forgive her.

And not a single post to remind people to go to or to report on the gun control rally today. FFS, guys.

I voted for scones, but I'm basically British, and here, they are never that good.

My husband and I cook a big dinner for our family and friends almost every weekend. Our children love it as it is a big and beloved part of their social life: maybe a recreation of extended family living in our lives where we are so displaced from our actual families. Unlike in a restaurant, the kids can run around and play and talk and watch movies for hours while adults have time to relax and enjoy conversation in a quiet and unhurried setting. There is no limit on the drinking of wine and that part alone is infinitely more economical than going out. Our friends are great cooks too and there is mutual appreciation of each other's skills and effort, something that is also so rare when our professions rarely intersect.

Hosted friends. We made slow-braised turkey thighs with sage and thyme accompanied by sage/onion/pumpkin; roasted fennels finished with cream and parmigiano; roasted turkey breast; pork loin cooked slowly in milk; roast sweet potatoes; cranberry sauce; pears in red wine.. friends brought kale, polenta with mushrooms, Italian spinach pudding, salads, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pies, pavlova and a cranberry flan. Yum.

Yeah, well, tell this to student in second month of recovery from multiple broken bones after being hit on her bike by a car running a stop sign. Cool driving and all but it has consequences and can destroy lives.

@6 One could reasonably blame the brain, not the scientists, for this problem. There is no monolithic idea about how the brain works; there are important details at every scale (e.g. which drugs act on which receptors--the mechanics of such processes matter but don't tell you much about how that receptor affects the operation of the system); there are many different brain systems and it is unclear to what extent there are common algorithms at work. Generally the confusion is not through lack of the scientists talking to one another.. it's because there is so much to know and still unclear what are the important facts. Interesting times. The Allan projects have already had and will continue to have impact by putting huge resources behind a particular focus. But there are a lot of alternative strategies that should also be explored.

Indeed. Dr Koch's opinion might reflect his own experience at Caltech. You could try interviewing the excellent and famously collaborative neuroscience faculty at our own public, premier research university to get another perspective.
