This election in particular has created polarized worlds of Facebook sharing where conspiracy theories and bad information flourish—yes, even among liberals. If that’s the world you want to live in, where reality changes based on the link you click, you should actually really like the way we did our endorsements. If it isn’t the world you want to live in, we should all strive to be better informed—and support good journalism.

So is this an admission by the Stranger that they aren't adhering to "good journalism" practices? Rather than being a "commentary", most people I talked to were simply confused by it, not realizing there were actually 2 endorsements. The fact that the widget stores your answer in a cookie means that you can't go back and see what other people are seeing. I fail to see this as a commentary on the "social media echo chamber", where at least you can dig up information on the other side if you're looking. This was just awkward and ageist.

It's spectacular because it's the biggest thing of its kind. This is not hard to understand trolls, back in your cave.

bell hooks:

To me an important breakthrough, I felt, in my work and that of others was the call to use the term white supremacy, over racism because racism in and of itself did not really allow for a discourse of colonization and decolonization, the recognition of the internalized racism within people of color and it was always in a sense keeping things at the level at which whiteness and white people remained at the center of the discussion.

In my classroom I might say to students that you know that when we use the term white supremacy it doesn’t just evoke white people, it evokes a political world that we can all frame ourselves in relationship to….

And so for me those words were very much about the constant reminder, one of institutional construct, that we’re not talking about personal construct in the sense of, how do you feel about me as a woman, or how do you feel about me as a black person?

… We have to problematize nationalism beyond race, in all kinds of ways that I think there’s a tremendous reluctance […] to have a more complex accounting of identity.

She uses the term "White Supremacy" in exactly the same way that bell hooks does. It's not a novel redefinition.

That's exactly why tons of BLM activists are starting to say, "don't take my vote for granted. Don't vote for any candidate that isn't vocal in support of BLM". They understand this, and are starting to leverage it.

Hey, a $3 cheaper sandwich at Subway is 3 bucks in my pocket. Who cares about anybody else?
Aug 8, 2014 DavidG commented on Who Can Afford to Rent a Place in San Francisco?.
@2 these prices are probably accurate, since they're the average over "the metropolitan area", not the hip close-in neighborhood (Capitol Hill/Mission/W-burg etc.), where rents are bound to be much higher.

Rasmussen: "I believe that it is wrong to condemn one party alone"

Sawant: "We also condemn the indiscriminate rocket attacks by Hamas against the civilian population living in Israel"

If only the letter was even-handed...

@1, @4 "Proportionality" is not, contrary to your fantasies, about demanding an Israeli head for every Palestinian. It's a rough measure to figure out the justice of killing Palestinians in the first place. Is it "justified" to kill 10 Palestinians to prevent 1 Israeli death? How about 100? Anybody advocating violence in either side of the conflict is just wrong. Nobody's even asking whether measures can be taken to protect Israelis that DON'T involve massive civilian casualties on the other side. It's just taken as a given that any number of Palestinians should be killed by association to Hamas, because Hamas "wants" to destroy Israel. In the modern world, that's not how we approach matters of justice. If my neighbor "wants" to kill me, I can't call in the police to firebomb his house and kill his family. If my neighbor attacks me, I can have him arrested and thrown in jail, but his family is not guilty of his crimes, though they may harbor him. THAT is what proportionality is about. Let the punishment fit the crime.
Jul 8, 2014 DavidG commented on How Washington State Screwed Up Its Legal Pot System.
"It's never been done before!" Nonsense. Colorado was more than a year ahead of us. There's obviously a thriving black market for marijuana in this state, which the LCB decided to pretend didn't exist instead of reaching out to and trying to incorporate in the new above-ground market. Then we open the first store - only 1 in the entire city of Seattle - and it's dramatically understocked. It's clear the LCB is a relic of the culture of Prohibition. It needs to be dissolved and sent home, these people have to be dragged kicking and screaming into implementation of the will of the voters.
