It's hard to imagine a better endorsement for this film. Thank you; I'm sure to seek it out now.

Paul, by saying "decade or so" I assume you are referring to the last several hundred years. (Fairytale princesses didn't suddenly appear in 2002, and girls have been fed the "princess + prince charming" idea since at least Cinderella, which was first published in 1697 but has roots in antiquity.)

And in the story to which you link, Kevin Clash says he's never tried to hide his homosexuality or been ashamed of it, but I recall Being Elmo seeming to place a weird special emphasis on his heterosexual past. It spent some real time on the development of his relationship with his former wife, and prominently featured his daughter from his heterosexual marriage. I can understand why it might seem safest for someone in Clash's position to stay closeted, but if he really weren't ashamed or trying to hide, as he says today, the movie wouldn't have tried so hard to imply he is straight.

Thanks for posting this, Brendan. I think I'll use it with my English language learners this afternoon!

Avon is a relatively rich suburb of Indianapolis. There are actual support resources nearby if these young men are allowed to take advantage of them...

Three years ago one of my community college students became homeless during the semester. The only shelter in our midwestern capitol city with any openings for women and children was a SA shelter. This lesbian household was told they had two choices: One of them could live on the street and the shelter would take the other mom and the kids as a "family," or they could all sleep on the street. My student let her partner and kids be a "family" in the eyes of those abusive fuckers while she slept outside. Two school employees even called to try to intervene. My dear great aunt dedicated her life to working with the SA, but that evil organization will never get a cent of my money.

It is important that people be reminded how few of the works we regularly see in museums are women's work. This is great news. Thanks for publicizing this here.

Duh: The husband gets 40 beads per year because the other 12 weeks per year the ladywife has her period and is UNCLEAN!

@21 What a beautifully helpful comment. I am sorry you needed to spell that out. I don't know if Dan will listen, but your comment helped me better understand. Thanks for taking the time.

"Placed next to each other [the words "gay" and softball"], the resulting phrase basically has no meaning for 99.99999 percent of the population."

Except, you know, for a fair number of lesbians. Oh right! We don't exist. Never mind. Lolz!

Thank you so much for this. I'm glad to know of Ellen Lesperance and her ideals. Feminism and my own stubborn idealism can feel lonely some days, then someone takes the time and trouble to illuminate another funky traveler determined to make it along a similar path and it gives me a new shot of energy. Thanks.
