Today in Idiots.
@8: Check out the novel Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach. It was published in 1975 so it's likely no longer in print, but you may be able to find it used. Perhaps some of the New England states would be willing to join us, although they are a little too far away. Becoming Canadian provinces, us in the west and Vermont and Massachusetts in the east, would be more practical.

Critical Mass Is Tonight.
@52: If it's just simply a fun harmless bike ride, why not move the time to Sunday morning when there's less traffic? Oh, I forgot--creating a nuisance for fewer people would take all the fun out of it. Never mind.
@13: If people are smiling and waving at a group of people riding bicycles escorted by police they probably think it's some kind of charity fundraiser. Why not turn it into something like that to raise money for some worthy cause such as, say, promoting bike safety awareness? There would probably be less hostility to Critical Mass if it actually had a purpose other than to disrupt rush hour traffic.

What Planet?.
These people are not here to express legitimate concerns about health care. If they were, they would actually ask questions and not engage in name calling or parrot slogans that they learned from Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck. They aren't there to learn or to listen, but only to prevent real and honest debate.
These vermin were in charge of this country for eight years and look what happened. Intelligent people are under no obligation to treat them respectfully. They should sit down, shut up and let the grown ups do their job.

Cyclist Assaulted On Capitol Hill.
I'm a little skeptical that the cyclist was actually stopped at an intersection. Most I've seen appear to think that red lights are Christmas decorations that someone forgot to take down.

Woman Videotapes Man Masturbating In Own Home, Man Gets In Trouble.
The woman should be arrested anyway for voyeurism unless she turns over the tape to the police to be destroyed. It's hard to believe, 64 years old or not, that she wasn't somehow getting off on watching this guy. If she couldn't tear herself away from the window and go watch a Disney video or something instead, she's the pervert, not him.

Re: Re: Re: Town Hall Smackdown.
From The Great Roob Revolution by Roger Price, 1970:
"The Roob, whose ancestors have existed for millenia, is the eternal plebian. His literary antecedents are Swift's Yahoo and Mencken's Boob...In Athens his progenitures murdered Socrates and condemned Aritotle; in Rome they demanded circuses and collaborated with Alaric; in Madrid they applauded the Inquisition and later Franco; in Paris they whooped it up around the guillotine; in London they beheaded Charles I; and in Berlin they almost Made It with Adolf Hitler. Time and again the latent Roob has appeared briefly in the foreground of history, never achieving power except as a mob and always being quickly repressed and condemned again to impotence."

Re: Re: Town Hall Smackdown.
A lot of these right wing douchebags (pardon the redundance in using the terms right wing and douchebag in the same sentence) are being bussed in from outside. Perhaps an ID check at the door to make sure those who attend actually live in the congressperson's district would be a good start.

What's the Deal with the Netherlands?.
@15: On a related note, when Americans use the term British they usually mean English. People from Wales are Welsh and people from Scotland are Scottish (at least to the educated, as opposed to those cretins who use the term Scotch. Scotch is an alcoholic beverage or the brand name of an adhesive tape, but a true Scot will wince at the term when used to apply to a native of his or her country). I could continue about inhabitants of the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, but that would be a bit too much.

What's the Deal with the Netherlands?.
I could be wrong, but the term Dutch probably came from Deutsch, German for German, and was in fact applied to Germans by Americans in the 19th century and earlier (cf. Pennsylvania Dutch, now known as Amish, who are actually descended from Germans). How it got transferred to natives of the Netherlands I don't know, but the Clueless American Who Can't Tell The Difference Theory probably has something to do with it.
