Hire Melissa. Your school coverage has been sucking for quite a long time. There's a lot to report on here, and no one but no one in this town is covering it. It's maddening.
Step up, Stranger. And don't hire some piker. Get someone who knows their shit—Melissa, Charlie Mas, Meg Diaz, Cliff Mass.
We got kids in the schools and we're pissed. Let's get it on, Stranger!

commented on Q13 Fox News: Seattle Police Officer Assaults 17-Year-Old Jaywalker
Is this the first time this cop has driven by Franklin right after school lets out?
The sheer volume of kids at that intersection at 3pm gives the jaywalkers a sense of entitlement. With no consistent enforcement there, that cop's behavior must have seemed bizarre to those girls. "This is the way it is around here, who is he to come along and tell us different?"
The cop should have known better. If SPD's going to start enforcing at that spot, they more than a lone white crewcut dude. Sad but not surprising he couldn't handle the situation appropriately.

I'm with @21. If the Stranger paid attention to our public schools (beyond personal slights), they'd have a shitload to write about Dr. Goodloe-Johnson. Plenty of drama there. The Times isn't digging deep. I wish someone would.
Wanda Fooka @24: I can say with authority that westello lives in the community and is heavily involved in schools. In my experience westello is unimpeachable. You, however...

@ Catalina, we're on the same wavelength. I too thought of Andy Rooney.
You know, he's going to kick off soon. 60 minutes will be needing a replacement. Don't turn up your nose, Charles, it's good money.

commented on The Seattle School District Responds
Just saw a TV truck outside the school in question and spoke with the crew. I think they said the NAACP is filing suit, but also I had a 2nd grader vying for my attention—so don't quote me.
The crew seemed to get all their facts from the Stranger. The school district is unable to respond due to the legal stuff.
I sure hope the teacher is guilty, because if s/he's not, everyone is going to think s/he is anyway.

Charles, if there's a bigot lurking among the teachers at our school, as your posts suggest, I hope you won't clam up now (at least privately, within the school community).
There are many children of color at our school, and a racist teacher does not deserve to work there.

So, please. What did the teacher and principal say when you brought this up with them? Surely you addressed the problem at its source before mustering the Sloggerati.

I'm too lazy to read all these comments—but Charles, I sure hope you took this up personally with the teacher and the principal. Did you not get satisfaction when you spoke with them about the problem? It would be passive aggressive, not to mention ineffective, to broadcast your dissatisfaction on Slog before addressing the problem directly with those involved.
My child is at the same school, and I'm aware that the administration there takes great pains to address racism—or at least show the world that they're addressing racism. I don't expect them to be perfect, but I do expect them to listen and respond to complaints such as this.
So did they blow you off? Your fellow parents want to know.
